In a remarkable testament to the healing power of medicine and the resilience of the human spirit, Arvind Patel, an 89-year-old man from Honolulu, has shared the life-changing experience that helped restore his voice after a vocal cord injury. Following the death of his partner of 68 years, Patel found himself facing significant emotional and physical challenges that left him feeling isolated and hopeless.

Patel’s struggle began shortly after losing his soulmate. He described the challenges he faced as overwhelming, particularly the sudden loss of his voice, a consequence of an injury to his vocal cords. “This thing that came up with my voice was something I could not imagine,” he recalled in an interview. “So many things I can live with, and when I lost my voice, it happened right after I lost my soulmate.” The profound impact of both the loss of his partner and the inability to communicate led Patel into a deep depression, prompting him to resign himself to what he believed was his fate.

As he grappled with these challenges, Patel emphasised that he had accepted the situation as “God’s will.” Nevertheless, his journey took a positive turn when he was introduced to Dr. Steven Chau, a specialist in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) conditions at Kaiser Permanente. The encounter proved to be pivotal, as Patel felt an immediate connection with Dr. Chau, which he described as fundamentally different from his previous medical experiences.
Recalling his first appointment, Patel noted, “I walked into the doctor’s room, he was already there. That’s the biggest thing I noticed.” This seemingly small detail resonated with Patel, who felt immediately reassured by Dr. Chau’s presence. The physician conducted a thorough examination, including video assessments of Patel’s vocal cords, and carefully explained his findings. “He checked me, took some videos, and then explained what was my problem through the videos, so patiently,” Patel recounted, highlighting the compassionate nature of Dr. Chau’s approach.
Following this initial diagnosis, Dr. Chau identified that Patel’s vocal cords were not functioning properly. He proposed a treatment plan that involved an injection to reposition one of the vocal cords, enabling the other cord to make contact and produce sound. Remarkably, during follow-up assessments, Patel experienced a significant improvement in his ability to speak, which he described as a transformation. “From here I went to California. My voice reopened,” he said, expressing his gratitude for the newfound ability to communicate.
Although Patel had previously resigned himself to his condition, he found renewed hope through Dr. Chau’s intervention. He referred to the experience as a miracle, attributing his recovery to his doctor’s expertise and compassion. “I knew it was a miracle,” Patel stated. “Sometimes miracles happen in life, but in my case, I think Dr. Chau was the miracle for me. He was the angel God sent in my life to heal me.”
Dr. Chau, on the other hand, humbly rejected the label of a hero. He expressed that seeing patients recover and thrive is the ultimate reward of his profession. “It’s amazing to see patients have these outcomes, but at the end of the day, we’re all thankful that we’re able to be in this position, and it’s a privilege to be able to help patients,” he remarked, underscoring the collaborative nature of healthcare.
Recently, Dr. Chau received recognition for his outstanding service, being named one of the Healthcare Heroes by the Healthcare Association of Hawaii. Patel attended the ceremony in support of his doctor, celebrating the compassionate care that made a significant difference in his life. The association publicly acknowledged Chau with a heartfelt tribute, stating, “Congratulations, Dr. Chau, on being named a Hawaiʻi Healthcare Hero. Mahalo for your outstanding and compassionate care and for the meaningful difference you have made in the lives of so many.”
In a world where health crises can often lead to feelings of despair and isolation, Patel’s story serves as a reminder of the potential for recovery, connection, and hope. This inspiring journey not only highlights the importance of empathy in healthcare but also celebrates the profound impact that doctors can have on the lives of their patients.
