Actor Shemar Moore is set to return to the role of Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson in the upcoming season of *S.W.A.T. Exiles*, but it’s not without a notable level of commitment. The 56-year-old Moore recently spoke to PEOPLE about the increasing difficulty of maintaining the physicality required for his role as the series progresses.

Moore, who has dedicated almost a decade to portraying Hondo, acknowledges that keeping fit is becoming more challenging as the years pass. “Staying in shape is getting harder and harder as the years go on, but I gotta do it,” he stated. Despite the physical demands, Moore is determined to see his character evolve. “I ain’t quitting until Father Time just says, ‘Hey, sit down somewhere,’” he joked.
As he prepares for Season 2 of *S.W.A.T. Exiles*, Moore revealed that he is back in the gym and has taken a closer look at his diet. “I gotta put that Hondo physique, the Hondo presence back together,” he noted, contrasting his current struggle with the relatively easier process of staying fit fifteen years ago. Collaborating with a trainer who has been with him for two decades has provided the necessary motivation to regain his action-ready physique.
In addition to the visual aspects of fitness, Moore emphasised the importance of being in shape for the more strenuous demands of filming. He explained, “I owe it to Hondo to look a certain way and move a certain way. But also, to be honest, you have to be in shape to do this job. Like, it’s not just vanity.” Filming an episode can span about eight days, with action sequences often consuming three or four of those days. The extensive physical activity, which includes running, fighting, and high-impact stunts, can indeed take a toll on an actor’s body.
Moore’s dedication to fitness is rooted not just in personal ambition but also in a profound respect for law enforcement. He believes it is essential to authentically portray the realities faced by police officers. “This isn’t just an acting game,” he pointed out. “Yes, we’re having fun. We’re entertaining the people. But we gotta show respect to the men and women of law enforcement that do this for real.”
Even beyond the gym, Moore has consistently highlighted the importance of a balanced diet in achieving fitness goals. He previously shared insights on his regimen in a 2021 interview, where he described his training as a blend of heavy weights, cardio, and cross-training. “Getting lean and mean starts in the kitchen with your diet,” he asserted, underscoring that physical appearance is just part of the equation.
In *S.W.A.T. Exiles*, Moore’s character encounters significant personal challenges, as the narrative takes a darker turn. Hondo faces the aftermath of his mother’s passing and the strains of divorce, which serve as catalysts for a deeper exploration of the character. “Hondo’s world has gotten really dim. After being cast aside for almost two years, he’s pulled back in—only to discover that forces within the system may be setting him up to fail,” he explained.
Despite this turmoil, Moore assures fans that the essence of Hondo remains intact. “It’s still Hondo, but now you’re gonna see a more human element of perseverance and finding purpose,” he said. A central theme of the upcoming season revolves around Hondo’s relationship with his daughter, raising the stakes as he navigates the dangerous world of law enforcement. “He doesn’t want to lose his life for the sake of his daughter,” Moore explained, hinting at the emotional complexities that will unfold in this season.
As *S.W.A.T. Exiles* prepares for its premiere on September 25, Moore’s commitment to the role and the character’s evolution promises an engaging experience for viewers. “You’re just gonna watch a human struggle of defying the odds and beating the machine,” he concluded. This season aims not only to entertain but also to resonate with audiences, highlighting the real struggles faced by those in law enforcement and their families.
