Linkin Park is embarking on a new chapter following the tragic loss of their frontman Chester Bennington, who died by suicide in 2017. The band’s latest documentary, titled *Unshatter*, delves into their transformative journey as they sought a new lead singer to help them reconnect with their music and fans.
The band’s co-lead vocalist, Mike Shinoda, recently expressed that the challenge following Bennington’s passing was not simply to find a singer who could imitate him. In their documentary, he revealed, “People might ask why we didn’t just find someone who sounds like Chester to perform our songs again. But in my mind, that would have been the worst possible version of our band.”

After several years of exploration, Linkin Park found their new voice in Emily Armstrong, lead vocalist of the band Dead Sara. Armstrong officially joined Linkin Park in 2024 and has brought her unique style to the band’s iconic tracks. Joe Hahn, the band’s DJ and creative director, stated, “It was important for us to not be a cover band of ourselves.” He further explained that their collaborative approaches involved inviting different artists to work with them before Armstrong became a key member.
Hahn shared a pivotal moment when he realised Armstrong could be the band’s new singer: “For me, it was when I heard her scream. I thought, ‘What the heck is coming out of someone that just has a beautiful voice?’ We thought she was cool.” However, uncertainties loomed over whether Armstrong could deliver the power required for some of Linkin Park’s most demanding hits, including classics like “In the End” and “Numb.”

A turning point came when Shinoda sent the group a recording of Armstrong performing “Crawling,” a track from their 2000 debut album, *Hybrid Theory*. “I remember getting a text message about her doing ‘Crawling,’” recalled bassist Dave Farrell. His immediate reaction was positive: “Oh s—. This works.”
The band members were committed to ensuring that Armstrong’s interpretations of their songs remained authentic to her personal style rather than replicating Bennington’s performances. Hahn remarked, “We heard [Armstrong’s rendition], made a few little modifications, and were just like, ‘Okay, this really works.’ It was almost the icebreaker to make the rest feel very achievable.”
Emily Armstrong was adamant about approaching the established music catalogue in her own way, rather than struggling to recreate previous performances. “It’s imperative that I sing the songs in my style,” she stated. In the face of high expectations, Armstrong reassured herself, stating, “Nobody could ever replace Chester. I just decided to do what I do.” This sentiment has been echoed by the band, who have assured her of their confidence in her unique identity as a performer.
As Linkin Park transitions to this new era, the shadow of Bennington remains integral to their identity. In 2024, the group released their eighth studio album, *From Zero*, which features Armstrong alongside new drummer Colin Brittain. Hahn acknowledged Bennington’s enduring influence, noting, “He’s still always with us. He’s a big part of everything we do. That is something that does not need to be explained.”
Moreover, Armstrong’s joining the band holds significant meaning, especially for the band members who have young daughters. Shinoda affirmed the importance of strong female role models for the next generation, saying, “I want my girls to look up to talented, strong, smart women. I’m proud that Emily is that.”
Reflecting on her unexpected opportunity with Linkin Park, Armstrong described it as a “pinch-me” moment filled with gratitude. She confessed to initial doubts about whether she could step into such a prominent role, yet she also recognised the lessons learned through perseverance. “I want someone to look at that and think, ‘If she can do it, I can do it,’” Armstrong expressed.
Currently, *Unshatter* is showcased in select theatres, featuring special screenings in 4DX and SCREENX formats. Alongside the film, Linkin Park has also released *Unshatter (Live in São Paulo)*, comprised of exclusive tracks not included in the documentary. As the band moves forward, they do so with a renewed spirit and an unwavering commitment to honouring their past while creating their future.
