Affleck’s late mother, Chris Anne Affleck, who devoted 35 years to teaching in the Cambridge public school system, was celebrated by her son for her remarkable impact on her students. “My mum was an extraordinary teacher… I think she made a lot of kids’ lives better, and I know she did mine,” Affleck stated. His tribute comes shortly after her passing in June at the age of 83, following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer the previous December.

In addition to his mother’s influence, Affleck also cited Gerry Speca, his high school drama teacher, as a transformative presence in his life. The actor credited Speca with instilling in him a sense of respect and the importance of collaboration, stating, “My whole value set and approach to life comes from him.” Affleck emphasised that things worth doing should be done seriously, and he learned that there is no hierarchy in life. Instead, everyone’s contribution holds equal value.
The lessons Affleck learned from Speca extended beyond the classroom. “Teachers, particularly those who work with high school students, are incredibly meaningful because of the lasting influence they can have on their students,” he remarked. He recalled how Speca’s drama class was a space that required commitment while also allowing students to express their vulnerabilities and discuss personal challenges.
Affleck shared how Speca was a unique educator who fostered an environment of mutual respect and integrity. He remarked, “He’s that kind of one-in-a-million teacher,” emphasising the immense gratitude he feels towards Speca for the impact he has had on his professional life.
The filmmaker noted that while many of Speca’s former students have pursued careers in the arts, the true value of Speca’s teachings is evident in the integrity and seriousness with which they approach their work. “The more meaningful thing is that when you come across somebody who went through that programme, they’re going to treat you with respect,” he explained.
Affleck further elaborated on the lessons of hard work and perseverance that Speca imparted. He asserted that success doesn’t come easily and that students should be prepared to earn their achievements gradually, taking on various roles before stepping into the spotlight. He poignantly added, “You’re going to do crew and you have a smaller part, a slightly bigger part, but you’re going to get to write, and your ideas are going to be heard and listened to.”
Perhaps most significantly, Affleck revealed that he applied Speca’s method of building drama in the production of *Animals*. He is hopeful that his former teacher appreciates the tribute woven through the film. “Literally verbatim, the Gerry Speca approach to building drama, I used on this film,” Affleck shared.
*Animals*, which Affleck co-wrote and directed, tells the story of Mark Kimball, a mayoral candidate in Los Angeles, who, along with his wife, must confront a looming threat to their carefully curated lives. The film’s release is scheduled for October 9 on Netflix, marking yet another milestone in Affleck’s storied career.
As the actor continues to navigate his journey in Hollywood, the lessons instilled by his mother and teacher remain at the forefront of his identity, both as a filmmaker and as a person. Affleck’s reflections underscore the lasting legacy of educators in shaping the lives of their students, a sentiment that resonates strongly within the film industry and beyond.
