For over 40 years, Debbie Allen has been a passionate advocate for those living with HIV/AIDS. At 76, the actress and dancer continues her mission, recently joining forces with Merck to launch an educational programme titled *Your Hive of Whole Health*. This new initiative aims to enhance awareness surrounding holistic health for the HIV community, incorporating aspects beyond just medical treatment.

In a recent interview with *PEOPLE*, Allen expressed enthusiasm for the focus on whole-body wellness, which reflects the interconnectivity of mental, emotional, and social health. “The concept of your whole hive of health—encompassing your mind, body, and spirit—could not be better articulated,” Allen stated. “The analogy of the hive, with bees working collaboratively, is indicative of how each part contributes to the overall success and health of the community.”
Allen articulated how the initiative encourages individuals to look beyond just their physical health. “It helps people evaluate their mental and spiritual state as well as their sense of belonging and social wellbeing,” she said. The programme features a well-researched website designed to provide information and resources not only for those living with HIV but also for their families, caregivers, and healthcare providers.
Reflecting on the drastic shifts in healthcare and societal attitudes towards HIV/AIDS since the epidemic began in the early 1980s, Allen expressed her gratitude for the progress made over the past four decades. “I remember when I first encountered this illness; my leading man on Broadway was suffering without us knowing what was wrong with him,” she recalled. “We were administering treatments that didn’t address the actual problem because we were in the dark about the virus itself.”
The evolution of understanding and treatment of HIV/AIDS has been immense, transforming from a period of fear and uncertainty to one characterised by resilience and innovation. “From panic and crisis, we have arrived at a time of thriving and education. The change has been dramatic,” she observed.
Despite the advancements, Allen stressed that significant challenges still remain. “My hope for this movement is to bring renewed attention to HIV/AIDS. This epidemic is not over, and there is still a battle to be fought,” she urged, pointing out that many in the United States still struggle to access necessary medications. “America serves as a model for the world in terms of democracy and healthcare access, and we must ensure that we do not neglect those in need.”
Allen’s commitment to community support remains strong. “We can never turn our backs on each other. It’s essential to uphold unity within our community and ensure that everyone receives equal access to healthcare, education, and their fundamental rights,” she emphasised.
Looking forward, Allen remains hopeful about the future of the HIV/AIDS community. “As we move forward, we can work together to create a more inclusive environment where everyone’s voices are heard, and where every individual has access to the care they need to thrive.”
The *Your Hive of Whole Health* initiative promises to serve as a vital resource for those touched by the epidemic. With its emphasis on holistic wellbeing, it stands as a testament to the ongoing efforts to create a brighter future for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
