For nearly a decade, Jurczak climbed the career ladder, switching jobs multiple times and achieving a six-figure salary. However, despite her professional successes, she found herself unfulfilled. “I realised I had some serious inner work to do because clearly it wasn’t the jobs,” she reflected in an interview, illustrating her quest for true satisfaction beyond financial stability.
The tipping point came when Jurczak felt overwhelmed by her burnout. “It became, ‘This burnout is a lot, and I don’t know if I can handle it.’” This moment of reckoning pushed her to explore the possibility of finding security outside the confines of a nine-to-five job. “I had to ask myself what I would regret more: not succeeding in a traditional sense or never having tried to follow my passions,” she said. This introspective approach illuminated her path forward, as she visualised her future self and the legacy she wished to leave behind.
Following her departure from the corporate sector, Jurczak became increasingly concerned about her financial health. Even with a substantial savings cushion, she felt the need for additional income streams. “I started building my side hustles because I knew that having savings wasn’t enough; I needed to see a consistent flow of income,” she explained. Her goal was to generate $4,000 a month to cover her living expenses, prompting her to explore various creative ventures.
Initially, Jurczak considered several income-generating ideas, ranging from day trading to vending machines but ultimately settled on outlets that allowed her to express her creativity. Today, her business portfolio includes photography, an Etsy shop, reselling clothes, and participating in paid online surveys. Additionally, she has cultivated an online presence, monetising her platform through brand deals and creator funds.
Despite her efforts, she occasionally finds herself reliant on her savings, particularly during months when her earnings fall short. For instance, she reported earning £2,886 in July, but in June, her income soared to £5,943. Jurczak acknowledges the unpredictability of income associated with self-employment can be daunting. “The hardest part was adjusting from receiving a steady paycheck to facing fluctuating income,” she admitted, revealing her ongoing struggle with self-doubt and the importance of financial prudence.
The transition to self-employment has not been without its challenges. Jurczak describes the emotional toll of constant uncertainty and the fear of failure. “It can get very scary when you’re not sure you’re doing the right thing. I’ve often faked confidence, even as I hoped to build my business,” she candidly shared. However, she believes that navigating these uncertainties can also lead to personal growth and creativity.
Jurczak has noticed a shift in the conversation surrounding self-employment, suggesting that “hustle culture” can often come across as disingenuous. She feels many narratives overlook the importance of planning and strategy. “I aim to share the reality of my journey, showing that it’s okay to still draw from savings at times,” she explained. Through her openness, she hopes to normalise the struggles and successes that accompany entrepreneurial ventures.
Ultimately, her content creation serves a dual purpose. While she profits from her initiatives, Jurczak takes pride in inspiring others to envision lives beyond traditional employment. “Hearing that I’ve encouraged others to consider a different path is what drives me,” she said.
