Lil Durk, the Chicago-based rapper, has been acquitted of serious charges related to an alleged murder-for-hire plot aimed at rival rapper Quando Rondo. The decision was made by a federal jury on 11 September 2023, following a three-day deliberation regarding the attempted murder case that emerged from a shooting incident in August 2022. This acquittal comes amidst a backdrop of high-profile violence in the rap community, notably the 2020 killing of Durk’s close associate, King Von.

The charges in question included conspiracy, stalking resulting in death, and murder for hire. Prosecutors argued that the plot was a form of retribution for King Von’s death, claiming it was orchestrated by Durk, whose real name is Durk Banks. These allegations stemmed from an incident in which a member of Rondo’s entourage fatally shot King Von at an Atlanta nightclub. During the trial, legal representatives for Durk consistently denied his involvement in the conspiracy to murder Rondo.
Prosecutors alleged that Durk had funded a group of men to follow Rondo, whose real name is Tyquian Bowman, while they were in Los Angeles, culminating in a shooting near the Beverly Center shopping mall on 19 August 2022. Rondo survived the attack; however, his cousin, Saviay’a Robinson, also known as Lul Pab, was tragically killed during the incident.
In contrast to the allegations against him, Durk’s defence argued that he had no role in the alleged murder-for-hire plot. His legal team asserted that the actions leading to the shooting were orchestrated by his former personal assistant, who they claimed was responsible for the fatal incident. This defence sought to create reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury about Durk’s involvement.
Despite the not guilty verdict for Durk, two of his co-defendants—David Lindsey and Deandre Wilson—were found guilty of conspiracy to commit stalking, as well as related charges. Prosecutors argued that these individuals acted as the shooters in the incident that led to Robinson’s death. Though the verdict was a disappointment for the prosecution, Bill Essayli, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney, expressed some satisfaction over the jury’s findings regarding Wilson and Lindsey, stating they delivered justice for Robinson’s family.
The trial drew considerable media attention and public support for Durk, with numerous fans gathered outside the courthouse, many wearing “Free Durk” merchandise and playing his music. The support extended to several celebrities, including Kanye West and Machine Gun Kelly, who voiced their backing for the rapper throughout the proceedings.
Following the verdict, Lil Durk’s attorney, Drew Findling, emphasised the importance of the defence’s victory and expressed hope that Durk would soon be able to return to his family. He declared that it was time for the “shackles” to be removed, reinforcing the sentiment that the rapper deserved freedom.
Despite his recent acquittal, Lil Durk remains in custody as he faces a second trial scheduled to begin on 5 October 2023. These forthcoming charges relate to federal racketeering and firearms offences, which could result in severe penalties, including a potential life sentence if he is convicted on all counts.
