The hikers called authorities for assistance at approximately 8:30 p.m. on 14 August, but it was not until just after 9:00 a.m. the following morning that they were safely escorted back to the trailhead. According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, the group was ill-prepared for their journey, which was estimated to take between seven to nine hours. They had commenced their hike at around 3:30 p.m. that day, but by nightfall, they faced dire conditions.

Rescue teams were quickly mobilised when it became clear that one of the teens was struggling with breathing issues amidst the strong winds and cold temperatures at elevations exceeding 5,000 feet. Upon arrival at the location, volunteer rescuers hiked more than four miles to reach the stranded group on Mount Lincoln, finding them at around 1:15 a.m. the next day.

The Fish and Game Department revealed that the teens were inadequately equipped for the hike. They lacked essential items such as torches, and found themselves running low on both food and water. Additionally, their clothing was not suitable for the challenging weather conditions. This lack of preparation prompted officials to consider billing the group for the cost of the rescue operation.

The rescue team provided the hikers with essential supplies, including lights, food, water, and warm clothing, before guiding them to the summit of Mt. Lafayette. They were then taken down the Old Bridal Path, eventually reaching safety at 9:07 a.m. While the exact costs of the rescue have not been disclosed, estimates suggest that the group could be facing charges exceeding £1,000.

Speaking to WNBC, Yadav acknowledged the gravity of their situation, explaining that the group decided to contact emergency services once darkness set in and temperatures began to plummet. He reflected on the experience, expressing gratitude towards the rescuers who assisted them, particularly following the distress experienced by their friend in respiratory distress.

Although New Hampshire Fish and Game officials have yet to comment further on the matter, the intention to seek compensation from the hikers highlights the serious implications of being unprepared for outdoor activities.
