Fla. Woman Accused of Leaving 2 Labradors to Die in Sweltering Storage Unit — and She’d Been Warned Before: Reports 

A 21-year-old woman in Florida has been arrested after two of her Labrador Retrievers were found dead in a storage unit where they had allegedly been abandoned without food and water. The discovery was made by the Bunnell Police Department on Sunday morning and has raised serious concerns regarding animal welfare.

The incident came to light when a fellow renter at the storage facility reported to police that they usually heard barking from the unit rented by Alexia Veronica Barquet. However, on the day of the discovery, there was unsettling silence, coupled with a foul odour emanating from the unit. Concerns about the well-being of the dogs prompted the police to investigate further.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers observed ants crawling beneath the door of Barquet’s storage unit, which led them to suspect there might be something amiss inside. They made the decision to reach out to Barquet, who then came to the facility and granted them access to the unit.

Once inside, officers were confronted with a tragic sight. They discovered the lifeless bodies of two female black Labradors, identified as Ava, aged five, and Karma, aged two. While Karma was found lying on the floor, Ava’s remains were contained in a black plastic bag. Barquet informed the officers that she had discovered Ava’s body earlier in the week and had simply left it in the storage unit, neglecting to take further action.

Reports indicate that Barquet claimed she last checked on Karma on July 17, stating that she had provided food and water at that time. However, police found no evidence of water in the dogs’ bowls, and the unit itself was described as unsanitary, covered with dog waste, trash, and debris. Furthermore, a portable cooling unit that was allegedly operating did not emit any cool air, and investigators noted that the interior temperature felt no cooler than the oppressive heat outside, which had a heat index of approximately 96 degrees Fahrenheit.

This distressing case is not the first instance of concern regarding Barquet’s treatment of her animals. Local animal services had previously intervened in March, warning her against keeping the dogs in such unsuitable conditions. Following the recent discovery, Barquet was arrested and now faces charges related to aggravated animal cruelty due to causing unnecessary pain and death, as well as the abandonment of animals without adequate provisions for food, water, and shelter.

Bunnell Police Chief David Brannon condemned the actions of Barquet, stating, “This is a disgusting case of animal cruelty, and these dogs died in a condition no animal should ever face. Animals depend entirely upon their owners for food, clean water, safe shelter, exercise, medical attention, and protection from dangerous conditions.” He emphasised the significant responsibility that comes with pet ownership and highlighted the impact of neglect on animal welfare.

Barquet’s bond has been set at $6,000, and according to official records, she managed to post the bond within three hours of her arrest. The local community continues to react with outrage to this incident, expressing concerns over the need for stricter regulations to ensure animal safety.

The case remains under investigation, and animal welfare advocates are monitoring the situation closely, hoping that it will bring about necessary changes in the care and treatment of pets in the future.

As the local police department and animal services work to address the aftermath of this tragic event, questions linger about how such neglect could occur, especially after prior warnings. The fate of Barquet’s remaining animals, if any, is also a subject of concern among community members and animal rights groups.
