During Meta’s recent annual Connect conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled a new AI gadget known as the Muse Charm. Designed to fit on a keychain, this compact device allows for real-time voice interaction with Meta’s Muse AI, eliminating the need to rely on a smartphone or application. The launch, which took place on Wednesday, 23rd September, aims to enhance the accessibility and personalisation of Meta’s technology, a key focus for the company as it moves forward.

Zuckerberg introduced the Muse Charm towards the conclusion of his presentation, sharing an excited glimpse of a product he previously hinted at during earlier sessions. He expressed enthusiasm for the device, stating, “All right, we just went through a lot of products. I’ve got one more to show you because that little handheld thing that I was working on, it’s actually real.” The Muse Charm is expected to hit the market in December, making it a timely gift option for the festive season.
The device operates by allowing users to simply tap a fingerprint sensor situated on its corner to commence interaction with Muse. It not only enables users to converse with the AI but also empowers them to showcase their surroundings without needing to access their phones. Zuckerberg noted, “If you’re not wearing glasses, this is going to be by far the fastest way to talk to your Muse and to show it what’s going on around you.”

Zuckerberg described the Muse Charm as a compact, sophisticated tool, saying, “So we’ve packed a lot of technology into this little guy.” He mentioned that initial prototypes have been crafted, and the experience thus far has been delightful for the team. The device features a screen that displays the Muse avatar, facilitating a user experience reminiscent of childhood toys like Tamagotchis.
While the Muse Charm is nearing completion, Zuckerberg confirmed that there is still work to be done in refining its materials and internal components. The late-year timeline for its release is ambitious, but the company is keen to have the device ready ahead of the busy shopping season, promising further details in the near future.
In the broader vision for Muse, Zuckerberg categorised the device as part of a shift towards creating a “personal superintelligence” that he believes will serve billions globally. He articulated an ambitious outlook for Muse, stating, “I expect that Muse is going to grow into the personal superintelligence that billions of people around the world are going to use to accomplish their goals and improve their lives.” Features such as goal-setting capabilities and personalised research are on the horizon, alongside the promise of each user having their unique, private AI companion.
The Muse Charm was not the only product unveiled at Meta Connect; new virtual reality (VR) glasses were also revealed. Zuckerberg described these glasses as multifunctional, serving as a “private cinema, a computer with multiple monitors and a game console in a pair of glasses.” Set to be priced at $1,299, these glasses are expected to ship in Spring 2024, adding to Meta’s extensive range of futuristic technology.
However, the unveiling comes at a time when the company and the wider AI sector are under scrutiny regarding potential risks associated with advanced technology. Concerns have been amplified in recent weeks, with researchers expressing fears that self-improving artificial intelligence could trigger existential threats. Notably, Jacob Coxon, a researcher who previously worked at Anthropic, voiced apprehensions about AI, emphasising the belief among some experts that its development could lead to catastrophic outcomes.
Coxon’s warning echoed sentiments shared by Evan Hubinger, a lead at Anthropic, who also highlighted the seriousness of the potential dangers posed by AI advancements. Together, their statements underscore the growing discourse about the rapid evolution of AI and its implications for the future.
While Meta appears committed to innovating in the tech industry with its latest ventures, the company also faces the challenge of addressing the growing public concern surrounding AI safety. As they prepare for the launch of the Muse Charm and other products, the dialogue about artificial intelligence, its benefits, and its risks will likely continue to shape the landscape of technology in the upcoming years.
