A Massachusetts mother has been sentenced to prison following her conviction in the manslaughter case of her three-year-old son, Yael Guardado-Prudencio. Jennifer Prudencio, 27, from Chelsea, accepted a plea agreement acknowledging her guilt for manslaughter and multiple counts of reckless endangerment of a child, related to events that led to her son’s tragic death in April 2024.

On Tuesday, 22nd September 2024, Prudencio was handed a prison sentence of four to six years, which will be followed by three years of probation. The court heard how she left her toddler alone with his older siblings, aged seven and eight, while she went out drinking at a bar before spending the night at her boyfriend’s house.
According to prosecutors, on the night of 6th April, the young boy showed signs of serious distress, including vomiting and appearing unusually pale. Despite these symptoms, Prudencio chose to leave him in the care of his siblings while she socialised with friends. An 8-year-old sibling had the presence of mind to text Prudencio during the night, expressing concerns over Yael’s condition and even sending her a video to illustrate his distress. The mother assured her children that she would return home shortly, yet she remained out until the following morning.
When Prudencio finally arrived home at around 10 a.m. on 7th April, it was too late – her son was dead. Initial reports indicate that the toddler had a history of health problems, including hemophilia, and had suffered a facial injury that had not been healing properly prior to his death. In the week leading up to the incident, he had reportedly vomited blood and required medical attention on two separate occasions, as stated by prosecutors.
It was reported that during her night out, Prudencio consumed alcohol for several hours before ultimately choosing not to return home despite her child’s critical condition. The Assistant Suffolk County Prosecutor, Audrey Mark, described Prudencio’s actions as “a conscious disregard for her child’s wellbeing,” emphasising the severe negligence involved in her decision-making.
Initially arrested on 9th April, Prudencio had pleaded not guilty to the charges of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment before eventually opting for a guilty plea. The case has drawn significant media attention, highlighting the serious implications of parental responsibilities and the law surrounding child welfare.
