Kaity Schultz, a 37-year-old mother from La Porte, Indiana, is navigating the complex journey of recovery following a harrowing accident that left her with severe spinal injuries. The incident occurred earlier this month when a massive tree fell onto her SUV while she was driving, just moments after she had dropped off her four-year-old son at daycare.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, Schultz was travelling northbound on Fail Road when the heavy tree crashed onto her 2012 GMC Acadia. The enormous weight of the tree trapped her inside the vehicle, prompting emergency crews to spend nearly two hours extricating her. Once freed, she was airlifted to a regional hospital where she underwent extensive treatment.

This tragedy comes on the heels of another heartbreaking family loss for Schultz. Just three weeks prior, she had lost her mother after a prolonged battle with lung cancer. Friends and family, who have organised a GoFundMe campaign to support Schultz, describe her as a dedicated wife, mother, and nanny who has devoted her life to caring for others.
The fundraiser’s team highlighted the emotional toll this accident has inflicted on the family, remarking, “While still mourning her mum and trying to hold her family together, tragedy struck again in a devastating and life-altering way.”
Schultz’s injuries have been described as catastrophic. Following surgery that lasted roughly six hours, she has lost all feeling and movement from the waist down. Her husband, Chris Schultz, was across the country when he learned of the incident. He recounted the shocking details of the accident, stating that upon being informed, he immediately booked a flight to be by her side.
Chris provided further insight into the rescue operations, revealing the immense effort required to lift the tree off his wife. “They brought a lift. It was like a 10,000-pound lift that they used to get her out eventually,” he said, adding that the situation was incredibly distressing as he awaited news about her condition.
Doctors have relieved pressure on Kaity’s spinal cord, but they have cautioned that the extent of the damage is significant. Although doctors have indicated that the chances of her walking again are slim, hope remains alive. Chris described his wife’s spirits as positive as she looks forward to rehabilitation. “Walking’s not … it’s a low chance, but it’s not impossible,” he said.
In an interview from her hospital bed in South Bend, Kaity spoke about her determination to recover. “I’m going to work really hard to get back home to my family and my work family,” she said. “It feels fantastic to know I have a million supporters behind me. You don’t realise until you get into a situation how much of an impact you make on people.”
The emotional strain of the incident has also affected their young son, JT. Chris shared how the child is grappling with the situation, asking, “When is mum coming home?” He expressed concern over how much his son understands but remains hopeful that reassurance will help. “When he sees me in the hospital it worries him, but he sees my [injuries] going away, so he knows I’m going to get better,” Schultz added.
Following her surgery, Kaity has been moved out of the intensive care unit and is now preparing for the next step in her recovery journey: intensive rehabilitation. Her family anticipates she will require several weeks in rehab, followed by outpatient therapy, before she can begin to mend the gaps her accident created.
The GoFundMe campaign set up for Schultz has garnered an outpouring of financial support from the community, reflecting the strong bonds she has created throughout her life. The funds raised will help cover medical expenses and support her during the challenging months of recovery ahead.
As Kaity faces this uphill battle, the unwavering support of her family, friends, and community stands as a testament to her resilience and the love surrounding her. As the Schultz family looks towards an uncertain future, their commitment to each other remains steadfast in this time of adversity.
