A 57-year-old father of four, Costa Fantis, who was described as “fit and healthy,” was recently given a devastating diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor. The only symptom he experienced was randomly smelling a “sweet caramel” scent. According to his son, Antonio, Costa would occasionally pick up on this unusual smell, which they initially didn’t think much of. Little did they know at the time that it was a fatal sign of something much more serious.

Antonio shared that his father, a chip shop owner from Stoke-on-Trent, would experience the sweet caramel smell sporadically, occurring quickly and only around once a month. Due to Costa’s history of epilepsy as a child, his family advised him to see a doctor assuming it was related to his previous condition. However, the tests conducted in April 2024 revealed shocking news – Costa was diagnosed with stage 4 IDH-wildtype glioblastoma, a form of brain tumor.

Glioblastoma, as outlined by the Mayo Clinic, is an aggressive type of cancer with no known cure. While treatments may help slow down cancer growth and alleviate symptoms, the survival rate remains poor. Costa’s situation became even more challenging as he showed no other symptoms aside from the phantom smell. This unusual occurrence, known as phantosmia, is rarely linked to brain tumors, highlighting the complexity and unpredictability of such medical conditions.

Antonio expressed the family’s mix of emotions upon receiving the news – from worry and fear to confusion about the situation, especially given Costa’s outward appearance of good health. Despite undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, Costa’s family is now exploring alternative treatments, as conventional methods have shown little progress in treating glioblastomas over the past two decades. Antonio emphasised the daunting reality of the diagnosis, noting that they were advised to “just enjoy your life, in the most harrowing way possible.”
The story of Costa Fantis serves as a stark reminder that health conditions can manifest in unexpected ways, even in individuals considered to be physically fit. The discovery of his brain tumor solely through a phantom smell underscores the importance of being vigilant and proactive about any unusual symptoms or changes in bodily functions. Antonio’s account sheds light on the emotional turmoil and resilience required when faced with sudden and life-altering diagnoses, urging others to prioritise their health and seek medical attention for any concerning signs, no matter how trivial they may seem.
As Costa Fantis navigates his journey battling glioblastoma, his experience highlights the need for continued research and advancements in treating complex and aggressive forms of cancer like his. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing each moment, even in the face of immense challenges. The support and determination displayed by Costa’s family in seeking alternative treatments showcase the unwavering spirit in confronting adversities, offering hope and inspiration in the face of adversity.
