A tragic incident in Chester, New Jersey, has left a community grappling with grief and concern as nearly five months have passed since the death of 35-year-old Brooke Hanlon. The mother and psychotherapist was found dead in her home on June 6, and to this date, authorities have not made any arrests related to the case.

According to an autopsy report recently obtained by PEOPLE, Hanlon died from “sharp force injuries,” with her death being classified as a homicide. The autopsy was conducted the following day by Dr. Di Wang, the Morris County Medical Examiner, following her discovery by her husband, James “Conor” Hanlon. He had rushed into their bedroom and found her bleeding profusely from multiple wounds, but despite his efforts to save her, she could not be revived.

Brooke Hanlon was reported wearing green shorts, a green tank top, and various pieces of jewellery, including a yellow metal ring presumed to be her wedding band, at the time of her death. The details surrounding the incident remain scarce as most information has been heavily redacted, which has become a common practice in this investigation. Remarkably, authorities waited over three weeks before releasing Hanlon’s name to the public.

The lack of progress in the investigation is deeply troubling for both her family and the community. Despite her untimely death, Brooke’s impact on those around her has been profound. Her obituary paints a portrait of a “gift from God”, cherished not only as a loving wife but also as an exceptional mother to her young daughter, Avery. The emotional bond described between Brooke and Avery is depicted as “spiritual” and everlasting.
Brooke was well-regarded for her kindness and empathy, as highlighted in her obituary. It notes her extensive volunteer work, demonstrating her commitment to bettering the lives of those around her. She had contributed to various causes, including working with children with autism and those in underprivileged situations, and even volunteered abroad in countries like India and Uganda.
Originally from Chester, Brooke’s formative years were spent there before she pursued higher education at Wake Forest University and later at Northeastern University. It was during her time in Boston, while studying for her Master’s in Counseling Psychology, that she met her husband, Conor. The couple married in 2021 and bought their home in Chester in 2024, welcoming their daughter Avery soon afterward.
On what would have been Avery’s first birthday in July, the family was left mourning the absence of a loving mother. A spokesperson for the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office recently declined to comment on the case when approached by PEOPLE, leading to heightened frustrations among those looking for answers.
As the investigation continues into its sixth month without any identified suspects, the tragic loss of Brooke Hanlon serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring impact one individual can have on a community. In the wake of such a devastating loss, Chester residents are left in a state of uncertainty, hoping for justice and answers in the weeks to come.
