Man Pleads Guilty After Trying to Stab Flight Attendant with Broken Spoon

A man from Massachusetts has offered a guilty plea following a harrowing incident on a United Airlines flight where he attempted to stab a flight attendant with a broken metal spoon. Francisco Severo Torres, aged 34 from Leominster, Massachusetts, found himself in hot water after tampering with an airplane door and menacing passengers on a flight from Los Angeles to Boston on March 5, 2023.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Massachusetts, Torres could potentially face a sentence of life imprisonment, up to five years of supervised release, and a hefty fine of up to $250,000. The troubling events unfolded when Torres allegedly interfered with one of the aircraft’s doors around 45 minutes before landing. He proceeded to make alarming threats, exclaiming that he would “kill every man on this plane” and declaring his intention to take over the aircraft.

Despite the gravity of his words, thankfully, no injuries were reported during the incident, as per court documents. Torres was immediately apprehended upon the flight’s arrival at Boston Logan International Airport, having been charged by criminal complaint a day after the incident and subsequently indicted by a federal grand jury in September of the same year.

The situation escalated when Torres reportedly lunged towards a flight attendant in a stabbing motion with the broken spoon, striking the neck area of the attendant three times. However, the quick thinking of passengers and crew on board led to his apprehension and subsequent containment.

During the investigation that followed, witnesses disclosed that Torres had exhibited suspicious behaviour prior to the attack, asking a fellow passenger about the location of the door handle as indicated on the safety card during the pre-flight safety briefing. Following these disturbing revelations, Torres pleaded guilty to one count of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts highlighted that the crew received an alarm in the cockpit signalling the disarming of a door on the aircraft, prompting swift action from the flight attendants. The door’s locking handle had been tampered with, causing concern among the crew members who promptly alerted the captain.

Torres is scheduled for sentencing on July 17, where he will await a tough verdict that could see him behind bars for a considerable term. In response to this incident, United Airlines released a statement asserting their zero-tolerance policy towards violence on their flights, affirming that the individual in question will face a ban pending further investigation.
