**Raúl Esparza Returns to Broadway in Upcoming Rock Musical ‘Galileo’**

Four-time Tony Award nominee Raúl Esparza is set to make his much-anticipated return to Broadway in “Galileo,” marking his first appearance on the Great White Way since 2012’s “Leap of Faith.” The new rock musical, inspired by the life of the renowned astronomer Galileo Galilei, promises a vibrant blend of contemporary themes and an exhilarating score described by Esparza as “nothing but bangers.”
The production will see Esparza take centre stage alongside a talented cast, including Joy Woods, Jeremy Kushnier, Bradley Dean, Jordon Lee Garcia, and Javier Muñoz, with Michael Park taking on the title role at select performances. The musical features a book by Emmy and Golden Globe winner Danny Strong and an original score by Zoe Sarnak and Michael Weiner.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Esparza shared his excitement about returning to the stage, emphasising the story’s connection to current societal issues. “It’s thrilling,” he remarked during the opening night of Mariska Hargitay’s show “Every Brilliant Thing” in June. “It has something to say about the way we live right now. And the music is extraordinary.”
“Galileo” explores the life of the early 17th-century scientist as he challenges the authority of contemporary institutions with his groundbreaking discoveries. Esparza highlights the relevance of Galileo’s struggles in light of modern-day challenges to knowledge and truth. “It’s the story of someone who found something true that changed the world and then was told by all the authorities that he was a liar,” he explained.
Additionally, the musical delves into personal relationships, notably Galileo’s dynamic with his confidant Barberini, portrayed by Jeremy Kushnier, and his brilliant daughter, Virginia, played by Tony nominee Joy Woods. Themes of ambition, sacrifice, and betrayal are woven throughout the narrative, illustrating the complexities of loyalty against the backdrop of revolutionary ideas.
Audiences are undoubtedly eager for Esparza’s return, as the actor has long been a fixture of Broadway’s elite. He first made his mark as Riff Raff in the 2000 revival of “The Rocky Horror Show” and has since showcased his musical prowess in a diverse array of roles, including the Emcee in “Cabaret” and Bobby in Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” Notably, he has gained acclaim for earning nominations in all four acting categories at the Tony Awards, a feat few performers achieve.
Esparza’s previous Broadway stint concluded with “Leap of Faith,” leaving a significant gap before re-emerging in a leading role. During the interim, he honed his craft on screen, taking on notable roles in series such as “Dopesick” and “Hannibal,” while also portraying D.A. Barba in over 120 episodes of the “Law & Order” franchise. Reflecting on his distinct experiences, he noted, “It was like having an entirely different career for a while. But this is home. Broadway’s home, and I’m happy to be back.”
His reunion with the world of theatre has brought an exhilarating blend of nostalgia and fresh challenges for the seasoned performer. “There’s nothing like having an audience every night and having that communication with people,” Esparza expressed. “It’s incredibly hard work but so, so rewarding.”
The return to Broadway, however, has presented some unexpected benefits. Esparza humorously mentioned, “Broadway, especially musicals, is the best diet you’ve ever been on. You can eat anything you want.”
Esparza is already familiar with the character of Galileo, having originated the role during the musical’s world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2024, where the production was first developed. The Broadway adaptation sees Tony winner Michael Mayer at the helm as director, with choreography by David Neumann and music supervision by Brian Usifer.
The ensemble cast for “Galileo” has grown in anticipation of its Broadway opening, with recent announcements revealing additional cast members. Bradley Dean will portray Bishop Grasso, while Jordon Lee Garcia takes on the role of Alessandro Tarantola, marking his Broadway debut. Hamilton veteran Javier Muñoz will play Cardinal Morosini, further enriching the show’s diverse lineup.
“Galileo” is set to begin preview performances on November 10, 2026, at the Shubert Theatre, with the official opening night scheduled for December 6, 2026. Tickets for the production are already available, and anticipation is building for this unique merging of history and music, promising to captivate audiences when it finally takes the stage.
