Supermodel and actress Cara Delevingne has made her foray into the music world with the release of her debut album, ‘Not Normal,’ on September 25. The project, which Delevingne describes as a significant step in her creative evolution, is influenced by personal experiences and, notably, her relationship with British musician Minke.

In an interview with Elle, Delevingne revealed that creating this album has played a crucial role in her journey towards maintaining both sobriety and sanity during challenging times. Over a span of three years, she poured her heart and soul into crafting ‘Not Normal’, a task she believes has taken a lifetime to prepare for. “I’ve been working on it for three years,” she explains. “It’s something I’ve put so much time into and I actually feel like I’ve been working on it for my whole life because it’s all been leading up to this.”
The album features twelve tracks, among which are “The Mask” and “Crazy, Baby.” The latter song is inspired by her four-year relationship with Minke, who contributed to two tracks on the album. Delevingne expressed her admiration for her partner, stating, “She’s such a talented musician” and praising the unique skills they share while collaborating in the studio.
Delevingne’s creative process has been deeply personal, marked by introspection and self-discovery. She shared that the songs represent her journey towards self-acceptance, stating, “I believed in myself and tried making friends with myself. I know that sounds weird. I was just really horrible to myself.” This newfound self-love is evident not only in her music but also in her overall approach to life.
Two of the tracks on ‘Not Normal’ serve as bookends to her musical narrative. The first was penned when she was just 18 years old, with the second coming during a stream of consciousness at 25. “Both of them were written on planes because that’s when I do most of my writing,” she reflected, showcasing the profound connection she has with her work.
In terms of collaborations, Delevingne joins forces with acclaimed artist Fiona Apple, adding yet another layer of depth to her debut project. The album is a reflection of her artistic journey, and Delevingne is vocal about how co-producing the tracks has taught her much about herself. “I’m really proud to say I co-produced it with some incredible people and have enjoyed the process so much,” she stated. “It’s also been something that’s kept me sane and sober.”
Despite the positive feedback on her new album, Delevingne has not shied away from discussing her past struggles, including a drug overdose. Earlier this summer, during an appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast, she opened up about her path to sobriety and the moment she realised she needed to change her lifestyle. “I knew I needed to get sober, so I medically was weaned off GBL… but I couldn’t do it at home,” she recounted. The episode demonstrated the severity of her experience and the support she garnered from Minke during this tumultuous period.
Reflecting on her overdose, Delevingne recounted the harrowing details, including how her girlfriend had to call for help. She emphasised the emotional toll such events can take on loved ones, acknowledging the gravity of her past choices. “Doing that to someone else is really rough,” she noted, which speaks to the underlying theme of resilience and recovery that permeates her music.
As ‘Not Normal’ takes its place in the music industry, Delevingne’s journey serves as an inspiration, illustrating how art can be a powerful medium for healing and self-expansion. With her unique blend of personal storytelling and musical talent, she opens a new chapter not only for her music career but also her life. Her desire to engage with her audience on such personal issues exemplifies the depth of her artistry, making her debut a significant milestone in her evolving narrative.
With such a profound message wrapped in her music, Delevingne hopes to resonate with others facing their own struggles. The release of ‘Not Normal’ is not just about music; it represents a milestone in her journey of self-discovery and healing, conveying the importance of love and support during challenging times in life.
