Collin Gosselin recently opened up about his complex relationship with his mother, Kate Gosselin, during the latest episode of Fox’s competitive series, Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, which aired on 29 October. The 22-year-old discussed the profound impact of his estrangement from his mother, describing significant feelings of anger and loss stemming from their troubled past.

In a raw confessional segment of the show, Collin reflected on how Kate’s actions had essentially robbed him of his childhood and personal freedom. “I’m here because my mother has taken a lot of things away from me, but this course is something she can’t take away,” he stated, revealing the deep-seated emotions that propelled him to participate in the intense training programme designed to push recruits to their limits.

The episode featured a challenging exercise intended to teach recruits about “finding controlled aggression.” In this particular task, participants were encouraged to bring forth their inner rage, with DS Jason Fox, one of the show’s main instructors, leading the activity. Collin was explicit about who he intended to channel this anger towards, noting, “When you see red, that’s your mum.”
The challenges in the show are reminiscent of the US Special Forces selection process, emphasising the importance of managing aggression under pressure. “As a Special Forces operator, we are there to overpower enemies that screw with our way of life. The byproduct is extreme violence,” Fox explained to the recruits before they underwent their transformations into what he termed “lunatic killers.”
Collin’s recent revelations come in the wake of his memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, which recounts his experiences growing up in a family that gained fame through reality television. He alleges that he was kept locked in a basement for two years during his formative years and recalls drastic actions taken due to what he describes as his mother’s poor parenting.
Additionally, Kate Gosselin, who has long been a public figure alongside her ex-husband Jon Gosselin and their eight children, has publicly denied these assertions. In previous statements, she has emphasised her commitment to safety and denied accusations regarding her parenting style. She claimed that all measures taken in their home were done at the guidance of professionals and were intended to ensure the safety of the family.
In response to Collin’s allegations, a representative for him condemned Kate’s statements made on social media as “false accusations” intended to shield her reputation. The representative asserted that Collin has never exhibited violent behaviour towards family members or animals, labelling his mother’s assertions as damaging and reprehensible.
Collin’s exploration of these themes was poignantly illustrated during his time on Special Forces. As he engaged in the high-pressure challenge, screaming in evident rage, DS Billy encouraged him to pour every ounce of energy into the exercise. Once it concluded, he was reminded to breathe and reflect upon the experience, which was described as a means of releasing the “demons” of his past.
In addition to his visible struggles on the show, Collin also took to social media to share his journey, stating, “You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only option.” His posts indicate a commitment to harnessing the lessons learned through his experiences to foster growth and resilience.
As new episodes continue to air every Thursday, audiences are left reflecting on Collin’s transformative journey and the broader implications of his experiences within a family shaped by the pressures of reality fame. The ongoing dialogue surrounding his childhood raises important questions about parental responsibility, mental health, and the lasting scars left by family dynamics.
