In a remarkable tale of survival, teenager Nolely Pina recently recounted his harrowing experience of being attacked by a bear while hiking on Mount Si in Washington State. The incident occurred on June 16 at around 1 p.m., as Pina and his friends sought adventure on the popular trail in the Mount Si Natural Resources Conservation Area.

According to a statement from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), the group was approximately 2.7 miles into their hike when a black bear, accompanied by her cub, charged towards them. The situation quickly escalated when the bear swiped at one of the hikers, leaving Pina and his companions in a state of panic.

Speaking to local CBS affiliate KIRO-TV, Pina disclosed the raw emotions he experienced during the encounter. “My heart was just racing so fast,” he said. In an attempt to deter the bear, he initially tried to make himself appear larger and louder than he felt. Unfortunately, these measures did not dissuade the aggressive animal.

In a desperate bid for safety, Pina and a friend attempted to flee in opposite directions. However, in the ensuing chaos, Pina lost his footing, tumbling down the mountain and through dense underbrush, shedding both his shoes and pants in the process. When he finally reached a flat area, he realised the bear had pursued him down the slope.
Faced with the terrifying knowledge that the bear was still in close proximity, Pina resorted to prayer, desperately asking, “Please get me out of here.” His ordeal continued for approximately 30 minutes, as he found himself caught in a standoff with the bear. During this time, the bear managed to scratch his leg twice, intensifying the trauma of the experience.
Throughout this frightening encounter, Pina employed various strategies to escape, including playing dead, trying to frighten the bear away, and even contemplating a physical confrontation. “I really don’t even know how I’m back here, to be honest,” he reflected after the attack, highlighting the surreal nature of his survival.
Just when it seemed that all hope was lost, Pina devised a different approach. He produced a loud whistle, an unexpected tactic in a tense moment. To his amazement, the sharp sound startled the bear, prompting it to flee from the scene.
Rescue teams and wildlife officials responded promptly to the incident, with the WDFW initially announcing that the area would be closed until they could locate the bear. However, after a thorough search, officials concluded that they were unable to find the animal. Consequently, they stated that the trails would reopen on the morning of June 18.
Pina’s close encounter with nature serves as a stark reminder of the challenges and dangers that can arise during outdoor activities, even in seemingly peaceful locations. It also underscores the importance of preparedness and awareness while hiking in wilderness areas.
As he continues to process the traumatic experience, Pina’s story has resonated with many, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit in the face of danger. His ordeal will likely encourage fellow hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to be vigilant and respectful of wildlife, as well as to be prepared for unexpected encounters during their adventures.
