A couple travelling on the I-35 highway in Texas is now able to smile at their extraordinary experience after their third child, Rylan, was unexpectedly born in the family truck. Chelsie and Rigel Randolph were en route to St. David’s Women’s Center in Austin early on the morning of 16 October when Chelsie’s water broke prematurely, leading to a frantic but ultimately joyful delivery.

Chelsie, a nurse by profession, had been scheduled for a cesarean section later that day, but the rapid onset of labour altered those plans dramatically. As the couple drove towards the hospital around 4:30 a.m., Chelsie began to realise that they might not make it in time. “I was like, ‘Okay, I think we’re going to make it,’ until I felt the head. I was like, ‘Okay, we’re not going to make it,’” she recalled, reflecting on the tense moments leading up to the birth.

Rigel attempted to pull the vehicle off the busy interstate, but struggled to find a safe location to stop. Eventually, they reached RM 1431 where Chelsie took matters into her own hands. Demonstrating remarkable composure, she delivered their daughter herself in the back of the truck. “I think my body knew what to do, and I did exactly what I was supposed to do,” she recounted.
In a heartwarming moment, Rigel described the birth of Rylan at 4:40 a.m., just minutes after Chelsie entered labour. “She pulls the baby onto her chest, Rylan cries within seconds, and I realised she’s okay. Then my very next concern is, what about mama?” he said, sharing the overwhelming emotions of the moment.
Fortunately, first responders were able to locate the Randolphs with the help of GPS technology and arrived at the scene approximately ten minutes after Rylan’s birth. Chelsie and her newborn were then transported by ambulance to St. David’s Women’s Center, where both were reported to be in good health.
The couple’s experience has turned into a fond memory, despite the initial panic. Upon arrival at the hospital, Chelsie was able to cradle her daughter in her arms while Rigel and their two other children gathered around them for a family photo. The family is now cherishing these special moments together, celebrating their newest addition.
Photographs shared by the family show not only Chelsie holding Rylan but also depict her nestled in a bassinet, a sweet wooden sign beside her reading, “hello world,” complete with her name and birth details. Baby Rylan was born weighing 7 pounds and 6 ounces, adding to the joy of the family during an unexpected and thrilling delivery.
In sharing their unique story, Chelsie and Rigel have highlighted the unpredictability of childbirth, showcasing the strength and resilience of mothers in unexpected situations. Their experience on the I-35 has not only given them a remarkable tale to tell but has also underscored the importance of remaining calm in emergencies.
Now back at home, the Randolph family has settled into life with their newest member, reflecting on the unexpected journey that culminated in the birth of Rylan. They have shared their story as a reminder of the surprises that life can bring, and the strength found in love and family.
