In a remarkable story of creativity and determination, Faranne Iman, a single mother from the UK, transformed a seemingly ordinary discarded dresser into the foundation of her new furniture-flipping business. The venture, which began in the dark of night, has since evolved into a significant source of income, enabling her to better support herself and her son, Jae.

In 2021, Iman was working full-time in an office while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood. Like many parents, she sought ways to supplement her income without compromising quality time with her son. Working part-time in a call centre had become unsustainable; the late shifts encroached on her weekends with Jae, prompting her to search for a more flexible solution.

When the COVID-19 pandemic led her office to adopt a remote working model, Iman found herself with more opportunities to explore personal projects. It was during this period that she noticed her neighbour had thrown out a dresser destined for the rubbish collection. Concerned about being seen retrieving a piece of furniture from the curb, she decided to wait until evening before venturing out with Jae to collect it.

Despite her initial embarrassment, Iman saw potential in the discarded item. Having minimal experience in furniture restoration, she was unsure whether she could sell it, but her resolve to create a better life for her family spurred her on. With Jae’s help, the two set to work on transforming the dresser in their improvised garage workshop, utilising free paint and a budget paintbrush bought from a local shop.
Looking back, Iman describes the early days of her furniture-flipping journey as a lesson in resilience. Her first project wasn’t perfect, as evidenced by the uneven paint finish and outdated hardware. However, she documented the experience on TikTok, showcasing the hands-on work she and Jae engaged in. They even managed to acquire two free nightstands from Facebook Marketplace, which they restored alongside the main dresser.
When they listed the newly refurbished three-piece set for sale at £400, the response was overwhelmingly positive. They sealed a deal at £350 for the set, which provided Iman with not only much-needed income but also a burst of encouragement. “That first sale gave me a confidence boost I didn’t even realise I needed,” she reflected, noting that it was more than a one-time project.
The triumph of that initial sale paved the way for what is now her flourishing business, Furniture by Fara. Iman has since honed her restoration skills, adopted a more selective approach to sourcing pieces, and developed a schedule that allows her to balance work on furniture with her responsibilities as a mother. Jae, who is now 14 and engaged in various school activities, has become a supportive partner in the business, although Iman has had to adapt her working patterns to accommodate his interests.
Striking a work-life balance can be daunting, and Iman occasionally finds herself overwhelmed by the demands of her growing business and her commitments at home. Nonetheless, she remains focused on her goal of building a secure future for herself and Jae. “Sometimes I feel like I’m constantly working, but I remind myself that I’m building something meaningful,” she said.
Iman’s furniture-flipping venture has reached a level where her earnings occasionally rival that of her full-time job. However, she has opted to maintain both income streams for the time being; this dual approach provides her with stability as she continues to nurture her business aspirations. “For now, this balance allows me the financial security I need,” she explained.
Reflecting on her journey, Iman cherishes the memory of the dresser that sparked her entrepreneurial spirit and the little boy who helped her on that fateful night. “I want to create a business that allows me more control over my time and financial independence, enabling me to be even more present for my son,” she concluded. That initial act of retrieving a discarded piece of furniture has led her to a path filled with possibility, ultimately allowing her to shape a better future for herself and Jae.
