Young Giraffe Makes Daring Escape from Arizona Zoo for Snacks

In an unusual turn of events, a three-year-old giraffe named Msituni managed to escape from her enclosure at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona. The incident took place just before the zoo was due to open its doors to visitors, causing a delay of 90 minutes on Wednesday, March 5th.
According to reports from the zoo, Msituni, known for her athletic and curious nature, decided to take matters into her own hands, or rather hooves, by hopping over the fence of her enclosure. Her adventure led her to explore the neighbourhood and indulge in a snack from a nearby mesquite tree.
Nancy Kluge, the president and CEO of Reid Park, mentioned that the zoo immediately activated their emergency protocols to handle the situation. Thankfully, the animal care and veterinary teams were able to coax Msituni back to safety using additional snacks and treats, as she seemed calm during the entire ordeal.
While this was the first instance of a giraffe escaping at the Reid Park Zoo, Kluge assured the public that their team was well-prepared to manage such incidents. Regular drills and training sessions are conducted to ensure staff readiness in handling unexpected situations like these.
To ensure the safety of both the giraffes and zoo visitors, the zoo announced plans to make short-term modifications to the giraffe enclosure. These changes will accommodate Msituni’s active and inquisitive nature, with further permanent modifications expected in the future.
Despite the escapade, the zoo emphasised that there was never any danger posed to the animals or humans in Msituni’s vicinity. Giraffes, naturally docile creatures, are not known to be aggressive towards people, but precautions were taken due to their sheer size.
The incident could be seen as Msituni’s way of introducing herself to her new environment and fellow zoo residents. She had only recently joined the Reid Park Zoo on February 19th and was welcomed as a friendly companion to giraffes Penny, Jasiri, and Moyo.
Adam Ramsey, the Director of Animal Care at Reid Park Zoo, expressed excitement about Msituni’s presence and believed she would be a great addition to the zoo’s giraffe family. Her playful spirit and adventurous nature are sure to bring joy and curiosity to visitors.
