In a recent exclusive interview with PEOPLE, actor Kurt Russell, 75, reflected on his decision to leave Los Angeles and settle in Colorado with his partner, Goldie Hawn. The couple now resides in a log-cabin lodge, which Russell describes as the perfect setting for his day-to-day activities and pursuits.

Russell made it clear that his move from Los Angeles was not an effort to flee the bustling city, but rather a choice to embrace a lifestyle more suited to his personal preferences. “I don’t dislike L.A.,” he stated. “It’s just not my preference in terms of how I like to live my life.” His affinity for nature and log homes traces back to his childhood, where he spent time in a cabin built by his grandparents in Maine.

Speaking at the Madison FYC Panel in Los Angeles, Russell elaborated on the joys of living in Colorado. “What I want to look at, what I want to be a part of — all the things that Colorado has to offer,” he expressed. He noted that establishing a ranch in Colorado was a significant goal for both him and Hawn, describing it as an integral part of their family’s journey. “When Goldie and I got together, a couple of years later, we both built a ranch there together, where our family has grown up. That was 40 years ago,” he reflected.
Despite the rarity of high-profile individuals choosing to relocate from Los Angeles at the time of his move, Russell felt it was a natural progression for his life. “I was fortunate that it really didn’t make any difference,” he shared. “But when I did it, nobody else was doing that. I had many people tell me, ‘Well, that’s goodbye. That’s it.’ I said, ‘Well, we’ll see.'” Interestingly, Russell has observed a trend in recent years, with more people opting for life outside of Los Angeles.
Russell explains that the community in Old Snowmass, where he resides, is composed of individuals who have a genuine desire to be there. “Everybody who lives there, they live there because they want to. I can’t say that about L.A.,” he added, highlighting the differences in lifestyle and community between the two locations.
In addition to enjoying their natural surroundings, Russell and Hawn have focused on providing a nurturing environment for their children. The couple is parents to Wyatt Russell, their youngest, while Hawn has two children from a previous marriage — Oliver and Kate Hudson. Russell expressed his satisfaction with the upbringing of their children, stating, “It was very different from living in a city… They grew up with a good dose of what nature can offer.”
He acknowledged the challenges that might come with rural living but emphasized the rewards it provides. “There are difficulties to it, but there are also great rewards to it. I’m just more comfortable there,” Russell noted.
Reflecting on his own upbringing in Maine, Russell described how those experiences shaped his outlook and connection to nature. “I suppose, once you’re exposed to that kind of thing, it’s always home,” he said. His appreciation for the lifestyle he was able to cultivate in Colorado resonates deeply, particularly regarding the legacy he and Hawn are able to offer their children.
As he looks back on his journey, Russell feels a profound sense of gratitude for both his personal and family life in Colorado. The connection he fosters with the land and the experiences he shares with his family only reinforce his contentment in this chosen lifestyle.
