United Flight 236 departed Newark Liberty International Airport at 5:43 p.m., but mid-flight, the aircraft, a Boeing 767, was diverted back to its departure point. A TikTok user, identified as Jordan Moore, who was on board at the time, reported that the crew became aware of a Bluetooth network named “BOMB” that was detected by another passenger shortly after take-off, despite all passengers being instructed to disable Bluetooth connections.

Moore recounted the unfolding situation in her social media post, noting that airline staff were informed immediately about this unusual Bluetooth network. She expressed her concern over the network’s presence and questioned the logic behind someone labelling it so provocatively. “Staff continues to reassure us that they believe this is a ‘selfish joke,’” Moore wrote, reflecting the tension in the cabin amidst efforts to ascertain the validity of the concern.

Following the discovery, United Airlines crew escalated the matter, leading to a decision to return to Newark to ensure passenger safety. The airline later confirmed that the flight was diverted “to address a potential security concern.” Despite initial assurances from the staff, concerns persisted among passengers onboard, which resulted in moments of heightened anxiety.
According to United Airlines, the Boeing 767 was carrying 190 passengers along with 12 crew members. After safely returning to Newark, the aircraft landed without further incident. Passengers were then allowed to disembark, and the plane underwent searches conducted by Port Authority police, including the deployment of K9 units, to verify its safety.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey released a statement affirming that security protocols were followed throughout the incident. They confirmed the plane landed safely and was cleared from any potential threats. Passengers were subjected to re-screening by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection before they were permitted to reboard the flight.
In a follow-up to the incident, United Airlines provided an update confirming that the flight resumed its journey to Palma de Mallorca with a new crew at 2:19 a.m. the next morning, indicating a swift resolution to the situation.
The incident underscores the heightened awareness and immediate action taken in response to potential security threats within air travel. Passengers were understandably shaken by the experience but were ultimately appreciative of the measures implemented to ensure their safety.
While most incidents of this nature turn out to be harmless, the presence of a Bluetooth network with such alarming nomenclature illustrates the need for vigilance and proper etiquette among airline passengers. With the incident resolved without harm, both the airline and authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining a secure travel environment.
