The Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) reported that the couple was hit around 2:40 a.m. while walking on the shoulder of the road in the 5000 block of Nicholson Drive. According to police, 20-year-old Mia Camille Dawson was driving a 2016 Nissan Rogue when she veered off the road and struck the pair. Leah Fonte tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while Shane Hirstius was transported to a local hospital, where he later passed away.

Dawson reportedly fled the scene of the accident but was apprehended shortly after in the vicinity. Following her arrest, she failed several sobriety tests, including a breathalyser test that revealed her blood alcohol concentration was 0.048%, surpassing the legal limit of 0.02% for individuals under the age of 21. She has been charged with multiple offences, including vehicular homicide, reckless operation of a vehicle, and hit-and-run driving.
Hirstius and Fonte, both originally from Metairie, Louisiana, were looking forward to their future together, having recently become engaged, with plans to marry in March 2028. As a member of the Third District Volunteer Fire Department, Hirstius was well regarded by his colleagues; assistant fire chief Alex Gorman paid tribute to him, emphasising his dedication to helping others and his deep love for firefighting.
In a heartfelt statement, Gorman shared that the couple was celebrating a friend’s birthday surrounded by loved ones when the tragedy occurred. He expressed that their lives were cut short far too soon, describing them as embodying a “beautiful relationship” that was filled with hope and dreams.
Hirstius, a dedicated firefighter, was also a student at Delgado Community College, where he was a member of the 2024 Dolphins baseball team. Meanwhile, Leah Fonte was in her final year at Louisiana State University (LSU), studying biological sciences and aspiring to have a career in dentistry. Friends and family remember her for her kind spirit and bright smile, which reportedly lit up any room she entered.
LSU President Wade Rousse expressed sympathies on behalf of the university and extended condolences to the Fonte family. He highlighted the profound sadness experienced by the LSU community following the devastating loss of a beloved student. Many are coming together to remember both Hirstius and Fonte, whose potential future was abruptly halted.
The fire department official requested privacy for both families as they come to terms with their grief and loss. They will be remembered not only for their love and aspirations but also for the impact they had on their friends, family, and community.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic crash is ongoing, with the BRPD continuing to gather information. As the community mourns, tributes for both Shane Hirstius and Leah Fonte continue to pour in, commemorating their lives and the joy they shared with those around them.
While their deaths represent an unimaginable loss, the legacy of their love and kindness is expected to endure within their community and beyond.
