The victims have been identified as Fabiola Gonzalez-Nunez, 23, her mother Maria Sylvia Nunez-Villalobos, 54, and her two-week-old son, Mateo Gonzalez. When police arrived at the residence shortly after 9:20 a.m., they discovered Fabiola suffering from multiple stab wounds. Tragically, both she and Nunez-Villalobos were pronounced dead at the scene, while the infant succumbed to his injuries later that same day after being taken to hospital.

Authorities reported that a three-year-old toddler was also found unharmed at the property. This child, believed to be the offspring of Gonzalez-Nunez and the main suspect, Joaquin Escoto, is now under the custody of Child Protective Services (CPS) after being hospitalised for a medical evaluation.

Escoto, 28, was arrested the same day as the stabbings, following a coordinated effort by police, including the SWAT team and hostage negotiation specialists. After establishing a perimeter around the area, officers managed to locate him hiding in a nearby residence, which ensured his capture occurred without incident.
Following his arrest, Escoto was taken to Stanislaus County Jail where he faces three counts of murder, along with special circumstance enhancements and weapon-related charges. He also had an outstanding warrant from a previous DUI case, complicating his legal situation further. Police have indicated that he was residing at the same address as the victims and was believed to have been in a relationship with Gonzalez-Nunez, although the precise nature of their relationship is still being investigated.
The Modesto Police Department released a statement expressing their sorrow over the devastating loss of life. “The loss of three lives, including that of an infant child, is a heartbreaking tragedy,” they remarked. While Escoto is now in custody, police have assured the public that the investigation will continue as they work to piece together the details surrounding the incident.
In response to this unforeseen tragedy, the families of the victims have established a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral costs and memorials. The fund highlighted Nunez-Villalobos as a “cherished” grandmother, noting her kind and strong character that impacted everyone around her. Fabiola was described as a devoted mother and daughter, with her family emphasising that her love for her children was boundless.
In addition to the heartfelt remembrances, they devoted a section to young Mateo, whose life was cut short before he could truly begin. The GoFundMe states: “Mateo was a precious baby whose smile and innocence brought happiness to everyone around him. They will forever remain in our hearts and will never be forgotten.”
The tragic circumstances surrounding this incident have sent shockwaves through the Modesto community, with residents expressing their grief and concern. As the investigation continues, many will be hoping for answers regarding the events that led to such heartbreak within one family.
