On 19 April, Thomas was discovered bleeding profusely from a deep cut to his neck and was able to make it into the Denny’s establishment, where staff members quickly came to his aid. Reports indicate that a witness observed the violent incident, describing a scene where Thomas stumbled into the restaurant amidst chaos and bloodshed.
According to court documents, Parkins faces multiple allegations, including first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center without bond. A preventive detention hearing is slated for 4 May to assess the circumstances surrounding his arrest and charges.

The unfolding events were brought to the attention of law enforcement when a witness reported seeing a man bleeding heavily in the Denny’s vicinity. The witness recalled noticing a commotion and then saw Thomas fall back, unable to steady himself. Another factor involved in the incident was Parkins, who was allegedly found by police with a knife measuring between three to four inches, partially concealed by his clothing.
After being informed of his rights, Parkins reportedly informed officers that he had been awake for several days, attributing his instability to methamphetamine use and excessive alcohol consumption. He shared insights into his chaotic lifestyle, indicating that he had recently lost his housing and was now living on the streets. When questioned about the violent encounter, Parkins claimed to have no recollection of fighting or the act of cutting Thomas but acknowledged fleeing upon hearing sirens.

The severity of Thomas’ injuries was alarming; medical assessments revealed that the knife had inflicted wounds deep enough to expose his trachea. Following emergency surgery, Thomas is currently recovering, although details about his ongoing condition remain limited.
Deborah Thomas, the mother of the injured man, expressed immense gratitude towards the Denny’s staff for their prompt response. She conveyed her heartfelt thanks during an interview, stating, “If it would have been any longer, he would have bled to death. There are very, very good people, and I’m so thankful for them.” She emphasised the importance of the witnesses who intervened, stating how their swift actions ultimately saved her son’s life.
In discussions with local media, Deborah revealed that she learned of the incident through a friend before later seeing it reported on the news. She noted that her son was without housing at the time of the attack but was unable to identify the specific cause of the confrontation.
As the case progresses, both the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office and the Portland Police Department have been approached for comments regarding the incident and the subsequent arrest. The community remains on alert as they await further developments in this troubling case that underscores issues surrounding violence and mental health.
Authorities continue to gather details surrounding the attack, focusing on the motives behind the unfortunate incident, which has shocked those familiar with both the victim and the suspect. With the health of Thomas still in a precarious state following his injuries, his recovery will undoubtedly be followed closely by friends, family, and the local community.
