A Hocking County man has made headlines after surviving a horrifying workplace accident that resulted in a rare condition known as internal decapitation. Phillip Pohle, aged 32, was carrying out maintenance at Hocking Hills State Park when he was tragically impaled by a tree branch on 13 March.

While performing his duties and attempting to clear fallen debris, Pohle encountered a life-threatening situation that could have proven fatal. According to reports by WBNS, he was pushing a large tree off the roadway when he experienced a sudden mishap. “I have no broken bones and that sucker hit me hard,” Pohle recounted. His recollection of the incident revealed how he was stunned after the initial impact and in disbelief about the severity of his injury.

The accident intensified when Pohle’s foot accidentally became lodged on the gas pedal of a front loader, causing the vehicle to lurch forward. Witnesses indicated that he reported hearing a “pop” or “crack” during the moment of impact. In a deeply emotional moment, Pohle expressed his fears for his two young children, stating that thoughts of his family flooded his mind as he grappled with the implications of his injury.
Fortunately, coworkers who witnessed the incident acted quickly to provide immediate assistance. They managed to stabilise Pohle’s neck and worked to cut away the remaining portions of the tree that had caused the injury. Unfortunately, adverse weather conditions hindered an airlift to the nearest medical facility, which necessitated that Pohle be intubated on-site before being transported.
Upon his arrival at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, medical staff evaluated Pohle and diagnosed him with internal decapitation—an uncommon injury where the skull becomes partially or wholly detached from the spine. Dr. Victor Awuor, the neurosurgeon who attended to him, undertook an intricate procedure, employing plates, screws, and rods to restore stability to Pohle’s spine and skull.
In the aftermath of this traumatic ordeal, Pohle’s girlfriend, Haley Davidson, and her friend Brittany Berry launched a GoFundMe campaign to help ease the family’s financial burden stemming from his extensive medical treatment. The fundraiser has gained considerable traction, raising nearly £10,000 of its £23,000 target. In the fundraiser’s description, Berry highlighted the challenges the family faces, emphasising the lengthy recovery that lies ahead for Pohle and the stress it places on Davidson, who is a stay-at-home mother to their children.
“This was such a fast, devastating blow to their little family, and now the world rests on Haley’s shoulders,” Berry wrote, illustrating the gravity of their situation. The couple’s young children have become a central focus for Pohle during his recovery journey, further highlighting the emotional toll of the incident.
As the story garnered wider attention, efforts for community support continue to grow. Many locals are rallying to aid the family as they navigate the recovery process. Phillip Pohle’s story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present in routine jobs and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unfathomable odds.
People have reached out to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Pohle’s employer, requesting comments on the incident and any measures being taken to prevent such accidents in the future. As Pohle continues his rehabilitation, his story may shine a light on workplace safety and the need for heightened awareness in hazardous environments.
