Florida Man Fatally Shot His Wife, Another Man in Front of Library in ‘Targeted Marital Issue,’ and He Remains at Large: Police

Authorities continue their search for 64-year-old Jesse Scott Ellis, who is wanted in connection with the tragic shooting deaths of his estranged wife and her colleague outside a library in Vero Beach, Florida. The incident, which took place in the early hours of March 24, has drawn significant media attention and left the local community in shock.

The victims have been identified as Stacie E. Mason, 49, and Danny J. Ooley, 56. Both were discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in a parking area outside the main branch of the Indian River County Library System at approximately 7 a.m. The police believe these killings to be the result of a “targeted marital issue” tied to Ellis and Mason’s recent separation.

During a press briefing, Vero Beach Police Chief David Currey stated that Ooley and Mason were reportedly in a romantic relationship, which is thought to have contributed to the violent encounter. The couple was in the process of separating, and their home was being sold as part of their divorce proceedings.

Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators shows Ooley arriving at the library first, parking his Ford Ranger, followed by Mason who entered Ooley’s vehicle a short time later. Chief Currey described how Ellis allegedly approached the parked truck and began shooting, first targeting Ooley and then turning to Mason.

In an effort to piece together the incident, law enforcement officials recovered an AR-style weapon believed to have been used in the shooting. Tragically, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. While the investigation remains ongoing, it was stated that there was no immediate threat to the public following the event.

After the shooting, police located a vehicle thought to be connected to Ellis near South Beach Park. Resources, including drones, helicopters, and K-9 units, were deployed in the search for the suspect. Investigators also executed search warrants at Ellis’s residence, and items discovered within the vehicle are currently undergoing analysis.

In a turn of events, reports emerged that a man matching Ellis’s description was seen entering the ocean close to Riomar Country Club. Witnesses observed him approximately 900 yards offshore before fire rescue teams made contact. Although the man identified himself with a different name, investigators later concluded he was likely Ellis.

As of now, Ellis has not been arrested and remains at large, with police confirming they have no evidence suggesting he owns a boat or any means of leaving the area. Only one vehicle linked to him is registered, which was subsequently recovered by officials.

Other details that surfaced highlighted the community impact made by the deceased. Danny Ooley had dedicated nearly 25 years to Indian River County, earning respect within the public works department and rising to the position of assistant director. In a statement released by County Administrator John Titkanich and Commission Chair Deryl Loar, they acknowledged his commitment to public service and the lasting influence he leaves behind.

Stacie Mason, who joined the county’s workforce in 2014 as a traffic analyst technician, was recognised for her professionalism and reliability. Colleagues described her as positive and a dependable part of the team, noting that her absence would deeply affect the community.

“The reality of this loss is profound, and there are no words that can fully capture its weight,” said Titkanich and Loar in their joint statement. They recognised both victims not merely as employees but as dedicated public servants who contributed significantly to the community.
