Country music star Brad Paisley has found himself at the centre of a tumultuous reaction following the release of his 2023 single “Same Here,” which features an interlude from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Launched one year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the track initially garnered overwhelmingly positive responses before facing a backlash that Paisley attributes to online interference.

During an appearance on Rolling Stone’s Nashville Now podcast on October 21, 2026, Paisley reflected on the dramatic shift in public sentiment surrounding the anthem celebrating shared human experiences amidst the chaos of war. The song, which aims to convey a message of unity and shared values, includes a poignant message from Zelenskyy that resonates deeply with the current state of affairs in Ukraine.
The initial reception of “Same Here” was remarkably favourable, with 98 percent of the feedback considered positive. Paisley noted that both his team and counterparts in Ukraine were actively monitoring responses online. However, it wasn’t long before the perception shifted dramatically, with reports suggesting that coordinated attacks by Russian online bots turned the tide to approximately 90 percent negativity.

These artificial personas launched a barrage of seemingly authentic criticism against the song, leading Paisley to suspect that foreign interference was responsible for the unfounded discontent. “It was all incredibly believable avatars,” he explained. “People pretending to be Americans, or even bots pretending to be Americans, attacking in a way that seemed very believable.”

For Paisley, the conflict in Ukraine hit home in a visceral way. The singer stated that he felt a profound urge to support the country and its people, leading him to take on the role of a United24 ambassador. This initiative, championed by Zelenskyy, aims to harness the influence of public figures to raise funds and awareness for Ukraine’s humanitarian and defensive needs amid the ongoing invasion.
The creation of “Same Here” involved collaboration with fellow musicians Lee Thomas Miller and Taylor Goldsmith, with the songwriting process beginning shortly after the outbreak of hostilities in February 2022. The lyrics explore the fundamental similarities that people share, emphasising love for family, freedom, and national pride.
Realising the potential impact of including Zelenskyy’s voice in the song, Paisley reached out to the Ukrainian leader, leading to a virtual meeting where the president agreed to lend his voice to the track. “I remember thinking this conversation…this friend across the ocean, talking about how different are we? Would be really powerful if that conversation was captured on audio,” Paisley recalled, highlighting the thought process behind the inclusion.
Despite the negative backlash that characterised the song’s reception following its release, Paisley expressed that he remains unfazed by the criticism. He emphasised that his intent was never to create music that catered to mass approval, but rather to share a piece of his heart. “You don’t do a song like that and be like, ‘But I want everyone to like it!’” he stated. “No, I did that because it’s how I feel.”
Through “Same Here,” Paisley hopes to foster a sense of empathy and understanding in a world often divided by geopolitical tensions. The blend of Ukrainian and American perspectives encapsulated in the track encourages listeners to recognise the universal values that bind us together, even in times of hardship.
As he continues his advocacy for Ukraine, Paisley stands firm in his mission to amplify the voices of those affected by the war, utilising his platform as an artist to convey the importance of solidarity and support in troubled times. “Same Here” serves as a powerful reminder of the connections forged through shared experience, transcending borders and language.
