Katie Thurston, known for her appearance on The Bachelorette, has recently shared an amusing update on social media following her double mastectomy. The 35-year-old revealed that her breast implants take on a luminous quality under certain light conditions, leading her to jokingly refer to herself as a “human jack-o’-lantern.”

This light-hearted revelation came on October 23, when Thurston posted a video to her Instagram, showcasing the phenomenon after shining a flashlight on her chest. “Just your human jack-o’-lantern 🎃, checking in after a #doublemastectomy,” she captioned the post. Her surgery, undertaken in April, was a crucial step in her ongoing battle with stage 4 breast cancer, during which she has recently announced a positive update: she is now without any evidence of disease.

Thurston’s disclosure about the glowing effect of her implants was backed by insights from medical professionals. Dr. Ali, a plastic surgeon, explained that certain types of breast implants can appear to glow in the dark when exposed to bright light. This occurs due to the different properties of the implant materials, which interact with light differently than natural body tissue. Further clarification from Dr. ER on Instagram highlighted that contemporary breast implants are constructed from materials specifically designed to reflect or absorb light in unique ways.

In sharing her personal experience, Thurston also aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer, especially the concerning trend of rising diagnoses among younger women. She emphasised the importance of being proactive in monitoring breast health and urged her followers not to wait until they reach 40 to start examining their breasts. “Don’t wait until you’re 40 to start paying attention to your boobs,” she stated. “How do they look? How do they feel? Any changes should be discussed with your medical team.”
Earlier in the month, during the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s 2026 Symposium & Awards Luncheon, Thurston spoke candidly about her diagnosis. She described the moment she received the shocking news of her stage 4 cancer on February 13, 2025. At that time, she and her fiancé, comedian Jeff Arcuri, were preparing for their wedding, a stark contrast to coping with her cancer diagnosis.
Reflecting on her diagnosis, Thurston expressed the fear and uncertainty she initially faced. “When I was first diagnosed as stage four, I thought it was going to be the end of my life,” she recounted. “I had no idea what kind of options I was going to have or how long I was going to live.” Her attendance at the event was underscored by her gratitude for ongoing cancer research, which she credited as instrumental in her continued journey.
Thurston’s experience has underscored her belief in the critical importance of breast cancer awareness and education. She shared with PEOPLE earlier this year that her experience has revealed the extent of breast cancer’s prevalence among younger women. “I did not realise how common breast cancer is in young women,” she admitted, reflecting on her own earlier reluctance to seek medical help. “Had I known, I would definitely have gotten that lump checked out sooner.”
Her current objectives revolve around educating others about breast health and the need for vigilance regarding any changes. “That’s kind of my purpose right now—educating people that cancer’s not something reserved for 40 and above,” she remarked.
Through her candid sharing of her journey—from personal health struggles to the recent uplifting news about her diagnosis—Thurston continues to foster a dialogue on an issue that impacts many, while also contributing to a broader understanding of breast cancer among younger generations. Her mix of humour and earnestness highlights a remarkable resilience as she navigates this challenging chapter of her life.
