Leah Melley, a business traveller, has voiced her distress over the apparent lack of communication from federal authorities regarding an alleged assault that took place aboard a United Airlines flight on 22 September. The flight in question was en route from Pittsburgh to Chicago, and Melley has been seeking updates for over five weeks since the incident occurred.

Melley initially reported the assault to a flight attendant during the journey, which she describes as having begun with amicable conversation with her seatmate. She recounted that the male passenger seated beside her engaged in typical small talk before she decided to retreat into her own space, donning AirPods and turning towards the window. However, the atmosphere quickly shifted within just half an hour into the flight, according to her account.

After placing the armrest down, Melley claims she noticed her seatmate’s increasingly fidgety behaviour. He reportedly raised the armrest repeatedly and eventually wrapped himself in a blanket. It was at this point that Melley first felt something brushing against her arm, which she initially dismissed as a byproduct of close seating. However, she soon realised that the man was allegedly rubbing her arm and attempting to touch her leg, behaviour she found alarming.
Melley further described a distressing moment when the male passenger purportedly exposed himself while touching himself under the blanket. In a state of shock, she attempted to excuse herself from the situation, but claims he responded by mouthing “no” at her. The extent of her discomfort intensified as she struggled to comprehend the situation unfolding in her vicinity.
Desperate for assistance, Melley managed to alert another passenger before moving to the back of the aircraft to discuss the matter with the flight crew. United Airlines subsequently moved her to a different seat after she reported the situation, a response which included an apology from the airline. The emergency did not end there though; upon the flight’s arrival in Chicago, law enforcement authorities were waiting to take over the investigation, and the male passenger was banned from flying with United pending further inquiry into the incident.
In a statement, a United Airlines spokesperson assured that the company takes such incidents very seriously, highlighting their policy to prohibit transport for any individual involved in assault. The airline has also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of its passengers.
Despite the airline’s response, Melley has expressed her frustration with the federal authorities, voicing concerns about the lack of updates on whether any charges have been filed against her assailant. She emphasised her desire for answers, stating, “We are at week five. Did you arrest him, did you charge him, are you going to charge him? Give me something.”
When approached for comment, the Chicago Police Department directed inquiries to the FBI’s field office in Chicago. However, a representative indicated that department policy prevents them from providing any details about ongoing investigations. The FBI, in turn, referred requests for details to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, though no response was received regarding the matter.
Melley has since urged for authorities to act more decisively, reflecting on the potential consequences for her daughters and family members should they find themselves in a similar situation. She has become an advocate for greater transparency and accountability in such serious matters, calling for the safety of all airline passengers to be paramount.
As the investigation continues, Melley’s unsettling experience has sparked a conversation about passenger safety and the need for effective reporting and response mechanisms within the aviation industry. Her story serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges that some individuals face while travelling and the ongoing need for vigilance in ensuring safe travel conditions.
