Officials from the Madera County Sheriff’s Office have recently confirmed that human remains discovered near McLeod Flatt in California are those of Kent Cross, a man who had been missing since 2016. The identification, announced on 26 October, comes after extensive forensic testing, including DNA analysis conducted this year.

Kent Cross was reported missing by his father in October 2016. At that time, local authorities began searches, but their efforts to locate him were unsuccessful. It was only in 2020 that human remains were unearthed in the vicinity of an off-road trail in Madera County. Despite thorough investigations to identify the remains, officials were unable to ascertain the identity of the deceased individual until recently.

In July of this year, the remains were sent to Othram, a forensic DNA testing laboratory located in Texas, well-known for its work on cold cases and in identifying unknown individuals. Using advanced genetic techniques, Othram analysed the remains and constructed a comprehensive single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) profile. This allowed their forensic genetic genealogy team to pursue leads that might assist in pinpointing the identity of the individual.

Later in October, these investigative leads were presented to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, which then conducted a follow-up investigation. Additional DNA testing, performed by the California Department of Justice Bureau of Forensic Science, ultimately confirmed that the remains belonged to Cross.
Cross’s family shared that he often visited the McLeod Flatt area and cherished it as his personal “happy place.” The identification of his remains has brought a sense of closure for his family, who have long sought answers regarding his disappearance. In a statement, Madera County Sheriff’s Office expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family and acknowledged the advancements in forensic technology that played a pivotal role in solving this case.
They stated, “A decade later, with new technology and continued efforts, we are grateful to provide the family answers about their loved one.” This case marks a significant moment considering the challenges posed by missing persons investigations, particularly those that stretch over many years.
Authorities highlighted that this identification is a noteworthy achievement within the scope of ongoing investigations into previously unresolved cases, underscoring Othram’s pivotal contribution. In total, the lab has helped resolve 93 cases in California, a testament to the impact of modern forensic science in providing closure to families.
The Madera County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with additional information regarding Kent Cross’s case to come forward. Investigators are still keen to gather any potential leads that could further clarify the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. Tips can be submitted directly to the sheriff’s office, or anonymously through Valley Crime Stoppers.
For a family who has endured uncertainty for nearly a decade, this identification not only validates their concerns but also reaffirms their hope in the relentless pursuit of justice and truth. Their journey, marked by heartache and unanswered questions, has now taken a pivotal turn, allowing them to honour Kent’s memory and legacy more fully.
