In a conversation with PEOPLE, White expressed immense pride at this unique recognition, especially as he transitions into retirement. “To make enough impact in my sport… I’m so proud,” the 40-year-old athlete said. His contributions have not only shaped competitive snowboarding but have also left an indelible mark on popular culture. The honour of being immortalised as a doll resonates deeply with him, indicating that his legacy will continue even away from competition.

Shaun White is well-known for his distinctive red hair and high-flying antics, characteristics that have defined his career. Reflecting on the design process of his doll, White shared, “Working on it was a trip.” Initially considering a representation of his iconic “Flying Tomato” look from his earlier career, he found it more complicated than anticipated to replicate accurately. “Taking something obviously big and then miniaturising it, it doesn’t always compute,” he noted, speaking about the challenges of transferring his features to doll form.

The production team at Mattel sent various samples of hair during the design phase, leading to a uniquely collaborative process. “I had all these little bits of hair on this paper taped to the wall all over at my house,” White recalled, indicating the level of detail and thought dedicated to capturing his likeness. In the end, the doll will feature a shorter hairstyle that speaks to White’s more recent look, particularly after he cut his iconic locks in December 2012.
The doll itself boasts a striking black-and-white outfit inspired by Whitespace, the performance snow brand founded by White in January 2022. White ensured his doll donned a jersey associated with “The Snow League,” a competition series he launched, which serves as a prominent tour for professional snowboarding athletes. He designed the uniform included with the doll to feature his name and number, giving it an authentic competitive feel.
Further highlighting his journey, White shared insights on Ken’s evolution over the years. As part of Barbie’s ongoing celebration of Ken’s 65th anniversary in 2026, the Kenbassadors collection aims to acknowledge men who have made significant societal contributions. This inclusion comes with a personal significance for White, who felt he did not fit the traditional mould of a Ken doll growing up. “He was blonde… I was the only redhead in my class,” he reflected, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to be represented as a unique figure.
White’s excitement for this project was palpable as he remarked on the journey of designing and creating the doll. “I just thought it was so cool how it all turned out,” he said, expressing satisfaction with the outcome of the collaborative effort. By allowing fans to connect with him in a new way through this collectible doll, he hopes to inspire future generations of snowboarders and athletes.
With the release of the Shaun White doll, Mattel continues to blend the realms of sports, culture, and iconic playthings, creating a product that is more than just a toy. In doing so, they represent not only the achievements of athletes but also the evolution of identity within the realms of popular culture. For fans eager to add a piece of Olympic history to their collections, Shaun White’s doll is set to be a must-have.
