A tragic incident on 26 October has deeply affected the community of Flandreau, South Dakota, after a fatal three-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 claimed the lives of four individuals, including three young girls who were students at Flandreau Public Schools. The Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains is now spearheading an initiative to raise funds for the funeral expenses of the girls, aiming to support their families during this harrowing time.

According to reports from the Madison Daily Leader and other local outlets, the collision occurred when an 88-year-old man was driving a 2020 Ford Ranger north in the southbound lanes of the interstate. His vehicle struck a 2003 Dodge Caravan head-on, which had been attempting to overtake a 2017 Peterbilt semi-truck at the time of the incident. Following this initial impact, the Dodge was then struck by the oncoming semi-truck.

The consequences of the crash were devastating. Four occupants of the Dodge—an including the teenage driver—were ejected from the vehicle as they were not wearing seat belts at the time. Sadly, three of these occupants, all students at Flandreau Public Schools, were killed in the accident. The girls, aged 12, 15, and 16, are being mourned by the local community, while a fourth passenger, a 12-year-old girl, sustained life-threatening injuries and has since been taken to a hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Ford Ranger, also not restrained by a seat belt, was killed in the crash. The Moody County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
In a poignant statement, Flandreau Public Schools expressed their condolences, stating, “During this difficult time, our thoughts are with everyone in our school community affected by this heartbreaking loss.” The school administration encouraged community members to extend empathy and support to one another, reminding individuals that it is important to check in on those struggling and to seek help when necessary.
In a bid to ease some of the financial burden on the bereaved families, the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains has launched a fundraising campaign specifically aimed at covering the funeral costs for the three deceased girls. The organisation has emphasised the profound impact of the loss on their community, stating, “We have lost members of our Club family, and all of us feel it, from our youngest children at the Clubhouse to our teens.”
The Boys & Girls Club further expressed its desire to alleviate some of the burdens faced by the families affected, allowing them the opportunity to focus on their grief and the memories of their loved ones. The initiative has been met with an outpouring of support from local residents and organisations, highlighting the strength and compassion of the Flandreau community in times of adversity.
As the community grapples with this devastating event, many are coming together to support one another, demonstrating resilience in the face of tragedy. Efforts from various local organisations, including the Boys & Girls Club, are indicative of the collective spirit aimed at healing and uplifting those impacted by the loss.
Amidst the sorrow, there is an opportunity for the community to reflect on the importance of safety on the roads, particularly in light of the young lives that were lost. Authorities have reiterated the critical role of seat belt usage and road awareness in preventing such senseless tragedies in the future.
As the fundraising campaign continues, it remains to be seen how the communities will honour the memories of the three girls whose lives were cut tragically short. For now, the focus is on showing compassion and support to the grieving families while navigating the difficult path of loss together.
