Joe Amabile, a former star of the reality television franchise “The Bachelor,” is preparing to run the New York City Marathon just three months after undergoing brain surgery. The 40-year-old, affectionately known as “Grocery Store Joe,” recently spoke to PEOPLE about his emotional journey as he gears up for the demanding challenge.

Earlier this summer, Amabile was diagnosed with a low-grade astrocytoma, a cancerous brain tumour that can cause a variety of symptoms, including headaches, seizures, and changes in mood. On August 6, he underwent surgery to remove the tumour, a significant procedure that left him focused on his recovery.

Reflecting on his health, Amabile shared, “Overall, I feel good. It’s obviously been challenging and tough at times, but I’m definitely better and getting better every day.” His attitude towards recovery has been positive, despite the challenges he has faced.
Amabile wasted no time in returning to his training regimen after being cleared for light exercise by his medical team about two weeks post-surgery. His commitment was evident as he documented his first three-mile run on Instagram, although he later acknowledged that he may have overdone it initially. “I probably ran more than I was cleared to run,” he admitted, expressing that this eagerness resulted in him needing additional rest afterwards.
Throughout his recovery, Amabile has encountered various hurdles such as migraines and speech difficulties, which have necessitated adjustments to his marathon training. He has opted to limit his long-distance runs and incorporates more rest days into his schedule. “My head can feel a little off… and it’s just recognising that and not overdoing it,” he stated.
Despite these setbacks, he remains determined to participate in the marathon, highlighting the importance of the event. “I think that’s the best day in New York City. There’s just so much energy, so much positivity,” he remarked. His primary aim for the race is to cross the finish line, even if it means pacing himself differently than he might in previous years.
In the face of life’s unpredictabilities, Amabile emphasised the importance of setting goals. “Life throws unexpected challenges in the way, but as long as you set a goal, you could still reach that goal,” he affirmed, encouraging others to pursue their ambitions despite obstacles. He added, “It just may be different how you get there.”
In addition to his personal fitness objectives, Amabile has partnered with Northwestern Mutual in advance of the marathon to address financial aspirations. At their recent event, “With You at Every Financial Goal,” he encouraged attendees to outline their goals on personalised race bibs, drawing parallels between achieving financial and physical milestones.
As the marathon approaches, Amabile’s excitement is palpable. Following the support he has received from fans and friends, including his wife, Serena Pitt, he has been uplifted by the online encouragement surrounding his journey. “I’m just ready to get out there,” he expressed. “I’m gonna run slow and that’s kinda it. If it gets too challenging, I’ve told myself to give myself grace and that it’s okay to stop.”
Amabile also reflected on the vulnerability he has experienced during this journey. Sharing his story has not only opened doors for him personally but has also inspired others facing their battles. He concluded, “Something that I haven’t always been the best at is being vulnerable. I think my story’s helped other people.”
With the marathon just around the corner, Joe Amabile stands as a testament to resilience and determination. His journey from diagnosis to training illustrates that even in the face of adversity, pursuing one’s goals remains possible.
