A Cleveland man has been indicted on multiple charges, including murder and sexual assault, following a tragic incident that occurred early in the morning on 13 October. Devin Thompson, 29, who was already wanted on a rape warrant at the time, allegedly broke into a residence where two teenagers were staying, leading to devastating consequences.

According to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, Thompson entered the home just before 6 a.m. It is reported that he fatally stabbed 16-year-old Mitanna Penn and raped another 16-year-old girl, who was pregnant. Emergency services were called to the residence, but unfortunately, Penn was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other girl was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, Thompson managed to evade authorities but was arrested two days later by the Cleveland Police Department. He was previously facing charges of rape and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, which had been brought against him by a separate grand jury before this latest incident occurred.
The case has since escalated, and on 21 October, a grand jury voted to indict Thompson on a staggering 42 counts. This extensive list of charges includes two counts of aggravated murder, one count of murder, and a range of sexual offences, illustrating the severity of the crimes he is accused of. The indictment, now filed in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, also contains charges for aggravated burglary, kidnapping, felonious assault, and numerous counts relating to unlawful sexual conduct.
Thompson currently remains in custody and is scheduled to be arraigned at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center later this year. The State Attorney has made it clear that they intend to pursue justice for both victims involved in this harrowing case.
In a poignant tribute, Mitanna Penn’s aunt, Micháela Penn, expressed her grief over the loss of her niece on social media. She described her as someone whose smile could light up any room, lamenting that the sixteen years they shared together were insufficient. Micháela paid homage to her niece’s lively spirit, saying, “You were a great dancer, swaggy af, and so silly.” She expressed the heartache of being the one to inform her mother of the tragedy, vowing that “no stone will go unturned in getting justice for you.”
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley weighed in on the case, labelling it as both tragic and disturbing. He stated that Thompson’s alleged actions reflect a shocking disregard for human life, reiterating the commitment to seek justice for Penn and the unnamed victim.
The investigation remains active, with authorities continuing to gather evidence surrounding the incident. The community is left in shock as they process the implications of this crime, with many calling for justice and support for the affected families.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the attention turns to the need for systemic support around the issues of safety and the protection of vulnerable individuals, particularly teenagers. The case underscores the broader concerns around relationships and safeguarding in communities and raises questions about further preventative measures that can be taken to avoid such heart-wrenching incidents in the future.
With Thompson facing overwhelming charges, the hope remains that justice will prevail, not only for Mitanna Penn but also for all survivors affected by such acts of violence. The families and loved ones are left to contend with their grief while advocating for change within the justice system to protect the most vulnerable members of society.
