According to local news outlet KLIN, the incident took place in the Lancaster County Hall of Justice. Deputy Sheriff Ben Houchin spoke to reporters, detailing that the man had retrieved the glass from his pocket on the second floor of the building. Fortunately, his injuries were not deemed life-threatening, though he did require stitches for the cut.

Emergency services swiftly responded to the situation, and the man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Following his medical care, he will be taken into custody, as indicated by Deputy Houchin during his interview.
This particular incident marked a notable first for the courthouse; it was reported to be the first time an ‘edged weapon’ had made it past security measures in the building. Houchin noted that while such weapons are generally prohibited, a piece of glass is somewhat different from the types of items that security checks typically focus on.
He further clarified, “This is the first time an edged weapon has gone through, but again, it is a piece of glass, and so that’s a little bit different than what our equipment up there is looking for.” This revelation has prompted a reassessment of the security protocols in place to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Despite the severity of the self-inflicted injury, no other individuals were reported injured during the unsettling event. Courthouse operations resumed shortly after the incident, as authorities worked to maintain order and ensure the safety of both staff and the public.
The situation has raised awareness about potential vulnerabilities in courthouse security, encouraging discussions about improvements to prevent weapons of any kind from entering such sensitive locations. As investigations into the incident continue, local officials may consider reviewing existing security procedures to enhance safety measures for all court-related activities.
As this story unfolds, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour in or around courthouses and other public spaces. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of reinforcing security within legal institutions, which play a crucial role in maintaining law and order in society.
