According to an official announcement from the City of Santa Monica, the removal of the sign marks an essential step in the revitalisation of the area. The sign, which has a prominent place in the California Register of Historical Resources, has become synonymous with Santa Monica Pier, greeted countless visitors over the past 85 years. Its removal is necessary to facilitate careful restoration work.
The restoration will be overseen by YESCO, a company known for its expertise in neon signage, having previously worked on famous displays like the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. The process will involve repairing and restoring the neon tubing, addressing rust issues, repainting, and conducting vital structural repairs to maintain the sign’s historic essence.

Work on the sign is scheduled to begin with the disassembly of the top crown. The main sign will follow in the days after, with the entire signage being transported to YESCO’s facility in Las Vegas for detailed refurbishing. While restoration is underway, the original sign will be kept safe as construction on the pier bridge continues.
In an effort to maintain the spirit of the landmark during the restoration phase, a half-scale replica of the original sign has been installed at the pier. This temporary installation is located near Pier Burger and offers visitors the opportunity to capture memories with the backdrop of iconic attractions like the Pacific Park roller coaster and the Santa Monica shoreline.
Mayor Caroline Torosis expressed the significance of the sign in the lives of many. “Few sights are as instantly recognisable as the Santa Monica Pier sign, and generations of residents and visitors have memories tied to seeing it at the entrance to the pier,” she stated. The mayor emphasised that the refurbishment is crucial for preserving the sign’s history while ensuring it continues to be a welcoming presence for years to come.
Once the restoration is complete, the sign will be reinstalled with some modifications, including a slight elevation increase. This adjustment is aimed at improving visibility from the road and providing better clearance for vehicles, ultimately enhancing safety for pedestrians and motorists alike.
The entirety of the Pier Bridge Replacement Project is expected to be finished by 2028, aligning with the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. This significant timeframe highlights the city’s commitment to enhancing their infrastructure while recognising the tradition and history embodied in structures like the Santa Monica Pier sign.
Until the original neon sign returns, visitors to Santa Monica can engage with the half-scale replica, maintaining the tradition of a quintessential snap at the pier. As the city embarks on this vital restoration, both locals and tourists alike are reminded of the enduring legacy of this landmark and the shared memories it has fostered over the decades.
