In a remarkable tale of courage, a newlywed couple, Sam and Anna McKee, found themselves in a life-threatening situation while on their honeymoon in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The couple, who hails from Port Angeles in Washington, had embarked on what was meant to be a dream safari after tying the knot just ten days earlier in Portugal.

Their adventure took a terrifying turn during a boat trip in a traditional mokoro, a dugout canoe commonly used in the region. According to Sam, while they were enjoying the serene waters, their guide had previously warned about a dangerous area where a hippo was known to keep its territory. Despite these warnings, the couple inadvertently drifted into deeper waters where they were told to steer clear.

As they navigated the waters, the tranquillity was shattered by the sounds of splashes and grunting. Sam described the moment he realised danger was imminent, recalling how he heard what sounded like “a really loud explosion” and quickly turned to see the enormous animal charging towards their boat. Instinctively, he clung to the sides of the vessel, but in an instant, the hippo lunged at him, capturing him in its powerful jaws.
The impact of the attack was described by Sam as akin to a car crash, with adrenaline coursing through him, numbing the pain at first. However, the situation escalated quickly. The force of the hippo’s attack threw both Anna and their guide into the water, leaving Anna in a state of confusion as she surfaced to find her husband in peril.
In a display of extraordinary bravery, Anna decided to confront the hippo to save her husband. Overcome by a surge of adrenaline and desperation, she charged at the animal, delivering blows in a frantic attempt to make it release Sam. Her courageous actions eventually proved successful, as the hippo retreated, allowing them a fleeting opportunity to reach the safety of the shore.
Once out of immediate danger, however, Sam discovered that he could not move his legs. In that frightening moment, Anna was filled with dread, fearing for Sam’s life again as she realised the extent of his injuries. As help was delayed, the couple faced a challenging wait; it took over 18 hours for Sam to receive adequate medical attention, during which time his condition deteriorated.
When Sam finally reached a hospital in South Africa, he required urgent abdominal surgery, receiving treatment that included staples to close his injuries and various forms of medical support. Despite the traumatic events they experienced, Sam’s physical recovery progressed, and he now describes living with “aches and pains” as his only lasting reminders of that horrific day.
In the time since their ordeal, the couple has sought to channel their experience into positive avenues. Sam has discovered a new passion for pottery, using his artwork as a means to raise money for children in need by purchasing skateboards. Additionally, they’ve documented their story, with plans to publish a book detailing their harrowing experience and the love that saw them through it.
Both Sam and Anna have expressed an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the time they’ve been given together despite the trauma. In an interview with Good Morning Britain, Anna reflected on the ordeal, acknowledging its horrific nature while emphasising the couple’s resilience. She underscored that they cherish their time together even more, as they continue to navigate the road to recovery side by side.
In sharing their story, the McKees not only highlight the inherent dangers of wildlife interactions but also the power of love and the instinct to protect those we cherish most. Their story is a testament to human endurance and the extraordinary lengths one will go to for a loved one.
