An alarming incident came to light recently after a driver was filmed dangerously speeding along a bike and pedestrian path on the floating bridge of Interstate 90 in Seattle. The event, which took place on 10 September, has sparked outrage among local cyclists and pedestrians who rely on the path each day.

Witness accounts describe the shocking sight of a white vehicle travelling at high speed down the narrow lane designated for non-motorised users. Erik Josberger, a cyclist who was travelling on the light rail at the time, captured the event on video. He expressed his concern during an interview, stating, “That bike lane is very hard to get to and is very narrow. They were going full freeway speed, and I was worried they would hit someone. The bike lane is very popular here, with hundreds or thousands of people per day.”
Upon recognising the potential danger posed by the driver, Josberger immediately reported the incident to local authorities. He hoped to prevent any potential accidents, especially given that many children and families use the path regularly.

In a statement regarding the incident, Trooper Rick Johnson from the Washington State Patrol (WSP) confirmed to the Seattle Times that law enforcement received notifications about the driver’s reckless behaviour. Unfortunately, by the time officers arrived at the scene, the vehicle had already left the area.

For Josberger, the incident was particularly troubling. As an avid cyclist and the father of a child who has recently taken up biking, he found the action especially disconcerting. He emphasised that familiarity with the path made the experience all the more alarming.
In response to the growing concern, both the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the WSP have initiated an investigation into how the driver accessed the protected lane. The path is heavily trafficked by pedestrians and cyclists, who often rely on it as a safe route.
RB McKeon, a spokesperson for WSDOT, conveyed the agency’s commitment to understanding and preventing similar incidents in the future. McKeon stated that while it is vital to keep motor vehicles off the pedestrian corridor, the authorities are also keen to take care not to restrict access for legitimate users of the path.
“We want pedestrians, walkers, rollers. We don’t just want to swing the pendulum the other way so it can’t be used by the people for what it was designed,” added McKeon. The emphasis on safety for all path users, including cyclists and pedestrians, remains a priority for officials as they move forward with their investigation.
While the implications of this reckless driving incident are clear, it highlights a broader concern regarding the safety of dedicated bike lanes and pedestrian pathways. Authorities will need to assess the protective measures currently in place and consider additional steps needed to prevent unauthorised vehicle access.
As investigations continue, the community is left to ponder how an incident like this could occur, especially in an area heavily frequented by those utilising the path for exercise and recreation. Local cyclists and pedestrians are understandably apprehensive about their safety in light of such a blatant disregard for traffic regulations.
The incident has gone viral, drawing attention not only within Seattle but also beyond, as people express their outrage and concern across social media platforms. While some may view this as a one-off occurrence, it serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that come with maintaining safety in urban environments for all users.
