**Identification of Human Remains Unveils Tragic History in Boynton Beach**

In May 2023, a grim discovery was made in the woodlands of Boynton Beach, Florida, when a landscaping employee stumbled across human remains. After an extensive investigation spanning over three years, authorities have confirmed that the remains belonged to Regina Hess, a woman who would have been 74 at the time of her death.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) made the announcement earlier this week, revealing that Regina Hess was born on 22 August 1948. The investigation surrounding her remains continues, as officials emphasise that identifying her is merely one part of the case. They are actively seeking information regarding her life prior to her untimely death, as well as the mysterious circumstances leading to it.

Regina Hess’s death has been classified as suspicious, prompting detectives to delve deeper into the events that may have preceded her demise. A spokesperson for PBSO confirmed that further details about her life and the circumstances surrounding her death are crucial to the investigation.

The unsettling discovery began in the spring of 2023, when a worker from a local landscaping nursery found the remains in a secluded area along the 8000 block of South Military Trail. Alongside the remains, personal items such as a grey tank top and black trousers were also found, suggesting that they had been at the location for a significant duration.

Upon the discovery, an autopsy conducted by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be undetermined. However, forensic students participating in Florida Gulf Coast University’s Human Identity and Trauma Analysis Program played a crucial role in the subsequent efforts, analysing and excavating the remains. They successfully established that the victim was an adult white female, approximately 5 feet 4 inches tall.

Despite efforts to establish a DNA profile and the public release of a drawing of the unidentified woman, it was not until 2026 that significant progress was made. Advances in forensic investigative genetic genealogy led authorities to a potential match with a deceased sibling of the victim. Through kinship analysis, investigators could confirm that the remains belonged to Regina Hess.

Upon confirming her identity, investigators notified Hess’s next of kin—her first cousin. They discovered that Regina had been estranged from her family for many years, with relatives reporting that their last contact with her had occurred approximately a decade ago, while they had not seen her in over half a century.
