A chance encounter at work has led to a life-altering diagnosis for a Fort Wayne woman who has suffered from debilitating pelvic pain since her early teenage years. Dawn Jemison, 43, had been experiencing chronic discomfort since she was just 11, with doctors at first attributing her condition to puberty. Over the years, various health professionals misdiagnosed her symptoms as being caused by conditions such as lupus, anemia, and endometritis, but no treatment seemed effective.

Jemison described her pain as “terrible, twisting, stabbing” sensations that radiated from her ribcage down to her pelvis. These symptoms severely impacted her capacity to carry out everyday tasks. After decades of seeking answers and finding none, Jemison was on the verge of undergoing a hysterectomy, believing that this drastic step might finally relieve her suffering.

In an unexpected turn of events, the pivotal moment arrived just before her scheduled procedure. While working as a restaurant server, Jemison found herself in the vicinity of a presentation being conducted by a group of healthcare sales representatives and doctors. During this session, a representative described a patient with remarkably similar symptoms to hers, highlighting a case in which the individual found relief after a stent was placed in a pelvic vein. This moment prompted Jemison to reconsider her situation.
“I was just really happy I was there,” she reflected. After the presentation, she approached the group and inquired about the case she had heard discussed. Her proactive engagement led her to connect with interventional cardiologist Dr. Abigail Qin-Nelson, who offered to evaluate her the following week. With newfound hope, Jemison postponed her hysterectomy.
Upon consultation, Dr. Qin-Nelson began investigating the possibility of pelvic congestion syndrome, a chronic condition characterised by compromised blood flow in the pelvic region. Diagnosing this syndrome can be complicated, as its symptoms often mimic those of several other medical issues. However, Dr. Qin-Nelson was able to employ a venogram – an imaging technique to inspect the veins – to ascertain the state of Jemison’s vascular health.
The results were significant: Jemison’s iliac vein, crucial for blood circulation from the legs and pelvic organs to the heart, had multiple areas of constriction, with one section being 76% compressed and another 52% blocked. For Jemison, this revelation was incredibly validating. “It was like a breath you can finally take,” she shared, expressing relief that her suffering was not in vain and that she was not merely imagining her pain.
Dr. Qin-Nelson proceeded with the treatment, placing two stents to alleviate the narrowness in Jemison’s veins. This intervention meant that blood could circulate more freely, which Jemison referred to as a “game changer.” She noted that the discomfort following the stenting was minimal and only lasted a few days.
In the year following the procedure, Jemison described a complete transformation in her life. Her daily pain levels have decreased significantly, leaving her with an unprecedented sense of freedom—something she never thought possible. “My pain is now at a zero,” she stated, looking back on her struggles.
Grateful for the serendipitous turn of events that led her to the correct diagnosis, Jemison reflected on how different her life could have been if she had gone through with the hysterectomy. “I would still probably be laying in my bed right now asking, ‘What did I do wrong?’” she commented.
Now, Jemison revels in the simple pleasures of life that her pain once made unbearable. She is keen to engage in activities she had previously avoided, such as walking in the park and gardening. “I can do that without having to work around my pain,” she expressed joyfully, marking a significant shift in her day-to-day existence.
Through her experience, Jemison highlights the importance of listening to one’s body and seeking alternatives when faced with ongoing health issues. Her story serves as a reminder of the value of persistence in the quest for answers and the impact that a single conversation can have on an individual’s health and wellbeing.
