A beloved coyote from Southern California, known as Wendy, has been euthanised following significant injuries resulting from a gunshot wound. This tragic decision was announced on September 8 by Wildlife Care of Southern California, the rescue organisation that had been monitoring her condition for over a year.

Wendy garnered attention in the San Fernando Valley for her unusual appearance, characterised by a large growth on the left side of her face. Residents of Studio City became concerned as they spotted the coyote scavenging for food, leading to widespread community interest in her wellbeing. Despite multiple efforts to capture her for treatment, it was not until recently that Wildlife Care finally succeeded in securing her.

Upon her capture, Wendy underwent examination and diagnostic imaging, which revealed that she had been shot with a pellet gun. Two pellets were found lodged in her head, and the resultant infection had severely compromised her upper jawbone, causing a substantial portion of it to deteriorate. The rescue organisation indicated that her injuries also suggested she may have been struck by a vehicle.
In a statement posted to Facebook, Wildlife Care of Southern California explained the extent of Wendy’s injuries was so severe that no surgical intervention could restore her to a functional state. They determined that she would have required a diet of soft foods for the remainder of her life, rendering her unable to return to the wild or adapt to life in captivity effectively.
“After thorough discussions and carefully weighing her long-term welfare and quality of life, we concluded that it would not be humane to keep her alive under these circumstances,” the organisation stated. While in their care, Wendy received antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to manage her pain, and she was provided with soft foods to eat. The rescue group ensured that she was as comfortable as possible during the days she spent with them.
Wildlife Care expressed admiration for Wendy’s resilience, noting how remarkable it was that she had survived for so long in such a perilous condition. They described her endurance as difficult to fathom, highlighting the challenges she faced in her fight for survival over the past year.
In response to the incident, Southern California Pit Bull Rescue has stepped up to offer a reward of £10,000 for any information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for inflicting harm on Wendy. They encouraged the public to come forward if they have any knowledge about the shooting, stating, “Someone shot her. Someone may know who did it.”
Despite the heartbreaking outcome, Wildlife Care of Southern California expressed gratitude to the community for their support in following Wendy’s journey. “Although the outcome was not the one any of us had hoped for, we are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to her care, helped with her capture, and held hope for her recovery,” they remarked.
This incident has raised significant concern over the safety of wildlife in urban areas, sparking discussions about the responsibilities of humans towards animals cohabiting in shared spaces. Residents have rallied around Wendy’s story, highlighting a broader dialogue about the need for compassion and protection for vulnerable wildlife.
As Wendy’s story comes to an end, her legacy may inspire further advocacy for wildlife welfare and stricter actions against animal cruelty in the region. The community continues to mourn the loss of a creature that had become a symbol of resilience and hope.
