Ana Gasteyer, well known for her time on “Saturday Night Live,” is set to bid farewell to her acclaimed role as Mildred Layton in the Broadway musical “Schmigadoon,” with her final performance scheduled for 6th September. The beloved actress, 59, is departing after an engaging run that has earned her a Tony nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical.

Gasteyer, who brought Mildred, the town reverend’s wife, to life, describes the experience as a “joy piñata,” filled with unexpected moments. Speaking to PEOPLE about her time in the production, she expressed a mixture of sadness and gratitude as she prepares to leave the stage. “It’s been such a fun experience,” she shared. “Broadway is hard work, and it’s not for the faint of heart, but I love it.”
“Schmigadoon!” has garnered significant acclaim, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical this year. Gasteyer praised her fellow cast members, noting, “They have a work ethic like nobody I’ve ever met, and they lift each other up.” This sense of community was a key factor in her desire to be a part of the show, which celebrates togetherness both on and off the stage.
Following Gasteyer’s departure, Jennifer Simard will take over the role of Mildred Layton. Simard has recently been recognised for her performance as Helen Sharp in “Death Becomes Her,” marking her as a worthy successor in a role that has quickly become iconic.
The musical adaptation of “Schmigadoon!” debuted at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on 20th April and has since established itself as a remarkable success. Created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, the show is inspired by the Apple TV musical comedy series of the same name. Under the direction and choreography of Christopher Gattelli, it features a compelling book and score by Paul. The production achieved a notable feat by securing four Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.
The narrative centres around Josh Skinner and Melissa Gimble, portrayed by Alex Brightman and Sara Chase, who find themselves in a whimsical town reminiscent of a Golden Age musical. The couple must navigate their relationship and uncover the secret to escaping this enchanted place, leading to a blend of comedic and heartfelt moments.
Reflecting on her journey in “Schmigadoon!”, Gasteyer remarked, “It unfolded in all the ways that I could have possibly dreamed of in the best possible way.” She fondly recalls her experiences within the ensemble, emphasising the joy of performing in group numbers compared to solo roles she has held in the past.
Following her tenure in “Schmigadoon!”, Gasteyer is set to assist her character September L. Davis with an off-Broadway project, titled “The Apology Tour.” This production is scheduled for nine performances at New York’s Studio Seaview beginning on 20th September. Gasteyer described the show as one where Davis will publicly address her past indiscretions and make amends, adding an intriguing narrative layer to her character.
The actress hinted at the nature of the performance, revealing, “She’s bringing people up on stage and making amends with them, and has written a piece about it, featuring a lot of original music by Tom Kitt and Sam Davis.” She hopes this new endeavour will offer a profound exploration of redemption and personal growth.

While Gasteyer’s Broadway performances are concluding, “Schmigadoon!” will continue running until 3rd January 2027, with plans for a North American tour to commence in September 2027.
