The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) received a call shortly after 1 p.m. regarding the situation at an apartment located on Village Lane, close to the intersection of 46th Street and Eagle Creek Parkway. Upon arrival, officers discovered both Shatayvia and Julian deceased from gunshot wounds, with a firearm reportedly found at the scene.

According to the IMPD, the prevailing theory among investigators is that Shatayvia shot her son before taking her own life. Officer Drew Brown expressed the profound impact of this incident on the community, stating, “This is unthinkable.” He emphasised that while the police are conducting their investigation, they are also focused on providing support and resources for individuals struggling with mental health issues or thoughts of suicide.
Authorities have launched an inquiry into whether there had been any prior involvement from the Indiana Department of Child Services at the family’s residence. This investigation aims to piece together the circumstances leading up to the tragic event, although a spokesperson confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office has stepped in to assist with the identification of the victims and to aid in the investigation process. As police work alongside a “cooperative witness,” the community is left with many unanswered questions regarding this devastating occurrence.
Mental health professionals have reiterated the importance of open conversations about mental health, especially in light of such a tragic incident. Officer Brown highlighted the accessible resources available for those in need of support, stating, “We’d like to remind our community of available resources for those struggling with mental health or thoughts of suicide.”
The IMPD encourages anyone grappling with emotional distress or other mental health challenges to seek help. A dedicated support line has been made available, with the 988 hotline operating around the clock for individuals who require someone to talk to or need immediate assistance.
In the wake of this heartbreaking event, the Indianapolis community is coming to terms with the implications of such a loss. Parents, caregivers, and mental health advocates are urged to engage in discussions about emotional wellbeing and the importance of seeking help when needed.
As local authorities continue their investigation, the focus remains on finding answers and ensuring that the community feels secure moving forward. The tragic death of Shatayvia and Julian Calderon serves as a painful reminder of the need for compassion and understanding towards those grappling with mental health issues.
