The love story of Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia, affectionately known as PK, and Ann-Charlotte Von Schedvin, or Lotta, has been captured in a new documentary titled *The Cycle of Love*. Produced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the film chronicles the couple’s enchanting journey from an unexpected meeting in India to an enduring partnership now spanning nearly five decades.

The tale begins in 1975 amid the vibrant atmosphere of Connaught Place, New Delhi, where PK, then a struggling artist belonging to the “untouchable” caste, was drawing portraits of tourists to make ends meet. Lotta, on the other hand, was travelling through India with friends along the famed hippie trail. Their interaction, limited to merely 20 minutes over two brief portrait sittings, changed the course of their lives forever.

In a remarkably bold confession, PK expressed his immediate feelings to Lotta, declaring he had found his future wife within those fleeting moments—a sentiment rooted in a childhood prophecy he had received. This prediction outlined specific characteristics of his future partner, which Lotta seemed to embody, from her distant origins in Sweden to her musical talents.

Their initial connection was anything but traditional. PK, communicating through his limited English, boldly asked Lotta if she was a Taurus and whether she played an instrument. Her affirmative responses seemed to align with the prophecy’s details, prompting his earnest declaration, “You will be my wife.” While Lotta’s initial reaction was one of surprise, she responded with intrigue, leading to a mutually agreed three-day journey to meet his family in India.

Their brief romance blossomed over several weeks, but as summer approached, Lotta had to return to Sweden to fulfil her parents’ expectations. Despite promising to return in August, she was prevented from doing so, leaving PK heartbroken yet resolute to reunite with her. Lacking funds for a plane ticket, he made the audacious decision to cycle from India to Sweden—a daunting expedition that would span over 120 days.

PK’s journey was fraught with challenges, vividly detailed in the documentary. He faced setbacks, including a refusal at the Pakistan border. However, kindness from strangers along the way helped him to persevere. One encounter in Amritsar proved pivotal; a man he had drawn offered to buy him a plane ticket to Kabul, which allowed him to engage in further self-affirming experiences.

The trials of his adventure fluctuated between wild hardships and unexpected kindness from strangers. In one instance, after witnessing a car accident, he returned to assist an injured woman, thus delaying his journey once again. As his visa expired, PK pushed onward towards his goal, determined that the love he felt would traverse all boundaries—including the possibility of never returning home.

Despite the unpredictability of his journey, PK nurtured a steadfast belief that their love story would continue, even if he faced death along the way. “Do or die,” he often told himself, holding onto a conviction that he would be reconnected with Lotta in another life if this one didn’t work out.

Upon arriving in Boras, Sweden, on May 28, 1977, after 123 days of cycling, PK and Lotta’s long-awaited reunion was marked by tears rather than words. Their emotional encounter epitomised the depth of their love, with both expressing that no words could capture the relief and joy of finally being together again.

Two years after their reunion, the couple married at the city hall in Boras, symbolising a love that had persevered against all odds. Today, they reside in Sweden and often return to India, where PK has noticed that Lotta has explored more of his homeland than he has.

The documentary *The Cycle of Love* not only serves as a testament to their extraordinary romance, but it also showcases the powerful theme of fate intertwined with human resilience. Filmmaker Orlando von Einsiedel, who directed the documentary, expressed how working closely with PK and Lotta, as well as their children Emelie and Karl, enriched the storytelling, ensuring it captured the emotional truth of a relationship that has weathered time and distance.

Through their shared experiences, PK and Lotta’s love stands as an inspiration, illustrating that true connections can transcend boundaries and that love, when authentic, possesses an enduring power that allows it to flourish, regardless of the challenges faced along the way.
