7-Year-Old Ends Up ‘Blistered’ from Severe Allergic Reaction After Helping Stepmom in the Garden

A seven-year-old boy from Illinois has undergone a frightening ordeal after developing a severe allergic reaction to pokeweed, a common but toxic plant. Rayden Vollrath was doing his part to assist in the family garden when he accidentally came into contact with the weed, which has raised concerns among his family and prompted a warning to other parents.

Rayden’s mother, Danielle Carnicelli, recounts the incident that occurred at the end of August when he was helping his stepmother, Andrea, in the garden. The young boy, who enjoys lending a hand both indoors and outdoors, was removing weeds when he unknowingly brushed against the pokeweed, a plant known for its toxicity and widespread presence in the wild.

Pokeweed, which can produce thousands of seeds, is readily spread by birds that consume its berries. The University of California reports that a single pokeweed plant can generate around 7,000 seeds, which can remain viable in the soil for as long as half a century. According to the National Library of Medicine, all parts of the pokeweed plant are harmful to humans.

After a few hours in the garden, Rayden began exhibiting symptoms resembling those associated with poison sumac. As his condition deteriorated, a painful rash that was blistered and clustered appeared on his skin. Concerned for their son’s health, Rayden’s father, Matthew Vollrath, took him to the emergency room when he displayed difficulty breathing.

Carnicelli described the alarming state in which her son found himself, noting that Rayden’s throat had swollen to the size of a quarter, making it hard for him to breathe. Furthermore, she indicated that his nasal passages produced a snoring sound even while awake. Upon arrival at the hospital, medical professionals quickly began investigating the cause of Rayden’s distress.

Doctors were initially uncertain about the source of the boy’s symptoms; however, they eventually confirmed that he had indeed experienced an allergic reaction to pokeweed. The experience was especially alarming for Rayden’s family as he had no known allergies prior to this incident.

Following this distressing episode, Carnicelli feels compelled to raise awareness about the potential dangers of pokeweed, particularly for children. “Pokeweed is very dangerous if not handled properly,” she stated. “Do your research before you pull any unknown weeds.”

She urged other parents and caregivers to remain vigilant after gardening activities, encouraging them to monitor for symptoms following any contact with unknown plants. She advised, “If something seems off with your child or any loved ones, seek medical help immediately.”

Taking to social media, the family has begun sharing their story to inform others about the risks associated with pokeweed. Their experience serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and recognising harmful plants, especially for those who enjoy gardening or spending time outdoors with young children.
