A promising young athlete at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, tragically lost his life during his team’s season opener on Saturday, 29 August. MicahJo Barnett, a 20-year-old running back, experienced a medical emergency shortly after scoring a touchdown in the game against Fort Lewis College, prompting officials to suspend the match.

The incident unfolded approximately 20 minutes into the game, with Barnett scoring the first touchdown, giving the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. Following the touchdown, play was halted after an offensive possession from Fort Lewis College concluded with a punt. Around 12:20 p.m. local time, paramedics, who were on standby as part of standard safety precautions for home games, were called to the sidelines to assist Barnett.
Despite the quick response from emergency services, who worked diligently to revive him for several minutes before transporting him to a local hospital, Barnett was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Barnett had previously made a name for himself during his high school career at Liberty North High School, where he contributed to the team’s success by leading them to a state title in his senior year.
Born in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, Barnett was the youngest of seven siblings. His untimely death has sent shockwaves through both the college community and the local area. In a heartfelt statement, Dr. Drew Van Horn, the interim president of William Jewell College, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the institution. “Our hearts are heavy, and we appreciate all of the support that we have received from the greater community,” he shared.
