In a recent conversation, Simpson expressed his newfound philosophy, stating, “I’m giving myself permission to slow the hustle down.” The actor, who has enjoyed a prolific career over the last 26 years with over 80 credits in film and television, believes that this stage of life offers an opportunity to reflect on what truly matters. “You don’t need to constantly be working. You can just relax and enjoy this existence while you still have it,” he remarked.

Simpson’s career launched in 2000 with a standout role in “Loser” and has since spanned a diverse range of genres. He has taken on roles such as a hacker in “House of Cards,” a cynical billionaire in “Westworld,” and an eccentric character in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Now, however, he is selective about the projects he chooses, prioritising those that ignite his creative passion.

“I only do projects that I love,” Simpson stated, elaborating on his desire to embrace challenges. He mentioned that roles which elicit uncertainty and force him to contemplate different facets of character are the ones he finds most appealing.

Originally preparing for a life as an English teacher, Simpson’s journey into acting was somewhat serendipitous. He was discovered by comedian Lewis Black during a stand-up performance, which led to his signing with an agency and subsequent auditions in New York and Hollywood. Reflecting on his path, Simpson shared, “Each job I’ve gotten, I’m stunned,” acknowledging his humble perspective on fame. He noted that he has never possessed a fixed ambition; instead prioritising enjoyment of the craft above all.

Although he has pondered roles he might have liked to play, Simpson feels no significant regrets when considering missed opportunities in casting. He embraces the unpredictability of his career, noting that while many actors often seek validation through their careers, he finds satisfaction simply in his love for acting.

Simpson is also eager to further explore his creative aspirations beyond acting. He recently wrote and produced a horror film titled “Slay,” which is set to premiere at London’s Frightfest. This project is particularly exciting for him as it marks a significant creative achievement; he penned the screenplay in a mere two months.

In addition to “Slay,” he has several projects lined up, including an appearance in an upcoming episode of “The Simpsons” and the second season of Netflix’s animated series “Haunted Hotel.” He expressed a desire to adapt Stephen King’s novella “The Langoliers” or star in a production of “The Eyes of the Dragon,” which resonates deeply with his creative influences.

As he reflects on his journey, Simpson is invigorated by the wisdom that comes with age. “The older you get, the more finite you appear,” he reflects. This understanding has inspired him to appreciate the present rather than chase after the elusive next big break. “I’m really just grateful for all of it,” he admits.
